Bottom Line

Popular with Indian and international tourists alike, Hotel Amar is a mid-range, relatively well-maintained hotel on a busy road it shares with lots of other hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The 66 rooms and suites here are large, with marble floors, minibars, and roomy bathrooms, but some show signs of wear and tear or could use a good scrub-down. Features include a smallish pool with a waterslide, a well-equipped fitness center, five meeting and event spaces, and free hotel-wide Wi-Fi. Room service is available and breakfast is included in room rates, but past guests report that it's nothing special. Travelers shopping around may also want to consider the hotel's sister property -- Amar Yatri Niwas -- just up the road, which is a bit smaller and a tad cheaper.

Hotel Amar

Scene

Mid-range, average hotel popular with Indian and international tourists

Hotel Amar is a decidedly ordinary, mid-range and middle-of-the-road hotel on a busy Agra road. The entrance is relatively grand for a hotel of this sort, with a semi-circular driveway leading up to a covered entryway. Indoors, the lobby features low ceilings, crushed-velvet sofas, and a lovely marble floor with "pietra dura" floral inlay, a nod to the intricate stone inlay found at the Taj Mahal and other Mughal-era attractions in the city. While its not especially remarkable, this hotel attracts Indian and foreign tourists alike, including the occasional wedding party during the early-winter wedding season

Location

On busy Fatehbad Road, a short drive from the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

Hotel Amar is located on Fatehbad Road, a long and busy strip with plenty of other hotels, restaurants, coffee chains,  and souvenir shops. It's about a 15-minute drive from here to the Taj Mahal (or around half an hour on foot, but the walk isn't pleasant due to plenty of cars and lack of shade). Agra Fort takes about eight minutes to reach by car, while it's a 12-minute drive to the Agra Cantonment Railway Station. Farther afield, Fatehpur Sikri takes an hour to reach by road. Factor in at least half an hour to get to the airport, traffic permitting.

Rooms

Large air-conditioned rooms with spacious bathrooms and some maintenance issues

Hotel Amar offers a variety of big, generally well-maintained, air-conditioned rooms and suites with marble floors and wood trim and furniture. Small Mughal art pieces hang on the walls, but otherwise the decor is not especially Indian, with simple wooden furniture and white beds contrasted with bold (and arguably gaudy) patterns on accent walls, curtains, and bed runners. The result is a bit disjointed and dated. Standard amenities include kettles, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Most bathrooms have some combination of black, white, and gray tiling and come with walk-in showers, although the Amar Suite features a whirlpool tub. Only basic toiletries are provided, so travelers may want to bring their own shampoo and conditioner. Note that while rooms are in good repair overall, there have been some cleanliness complaints from past guests and some bathrooms are in need of repairs, or at least a good grout-scrubbing.

Pool with waterslide, fitness center, five meeting spaces, and restaurant with free but basic buffet breakfast

Hotel Amar is a popular venue for business meetings and weddings, with five event spaces for rent, the largest of which seats 500 banquet style. There's also a brick terrace area out back with smallish outdoor pool with a waterslide and a beat-up old swing chair off to one side. Inside, there's a fitness center featuring a good variety of cardio and weight-training machines plus free weights. Dining options include Noorjahan Restaurant, which serves Indian, Chinese, and Western cuisine (with room service available), plus Madira Bar, with beer, wine, and spirits. A buffet breakfast is included in room rates, but guests report that it's nothing special.
