Bottom Line

Hotel Travellers Inn's excellent location in South Mumbai's Ballard Estate neighborhood makes it a great option for backpackers and other budget travelers who want to stay in the heart of things but don't have the means to drop a small fortune at one of the snazzier area properties. There are 20 rooms here (including two dorms); some units have air-conditioning and even rainfall showers, but overall they are bare-bones. Facilities are limited to free hotel-wide Wi-Fi, a super simple breakfast, and free on-site parking, though given that the vast majority of those who stay here are international backpackers, the internet gets more use than the parking. Budget travelers looking for something a bit nicer may want to consider the nearby, two-and-a-half-pearl Residency Hotel for free breakfast and contemporary rooms.

Hotel Travellers Inn

Scene

Budget guesthouse with pleasant common area

Hotel Travellers Inn is an ultra low-budget backpacker hotel that feels more like a hostel. It's housed in a simple building with a two-tone brick-red and yellowish sandstone facade. A narrow staircase leads up to a long, narrow reception area with a reception desk and a few plastic seats. One of the nicest features here is the common room with mosaic floors and lots of seating where travelers can meet up with one another or borrow books from the hotel's book exchange. Unsurprisingly, this hotel attracts international backpackers traveling on the cheap.

Location

Great location near the railway station and within easy walking distance of many Mumbai attractions

Hotel Travelers Inn is located in the Ballard Estate neighborhood of Mumbai, about a 10-minute walk from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a landmark railway station built in the ornate Indo-Saracenic style and the main transit station serving south Mumbai. It's within easy walking distance of many of the area's  attractions, including the Bombay High Court and the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Gateway of India -- where boats out to the ruins at Elephanta Island -- is a 20-minute walk away. Colaba -- a popular area for shipping and eating, particularly among foreign tourists, takes about 10 minutes to reach by car or a half-hour on foot. Further afield, Chowpatty Beach takes 13 minutes to reach by car. The famous sea-facing Sufi shrine of Haji Ali is a 15-minute drive away. Mumbai Airport takes around 40 minutes to reach by car without traffic -- but there's often traffic, so guests traveling during rush hour would be wise to give themselves twice that amount of time.

Rooms

Simple dorms and private rooms with plastic furniture, some with air-conditioning

This budget property includes a variety of simple rooms with or without air-conditioning. There are also a couple of dorms (one with three beds and one with four beds). These come with lockers and can be booked as whole units or by the individual bed. Decor across room types is bare-bones, with plastic tables and chairs and metal bed frames with thin mattresses, plus tiny windows, though rooms do have small flat-screen TVs and wall-mounted fans. Bathrooms are of the open wet-room variety, though some have rainfall showerheads. Guests should bring their own toiletries and towels.

Facilities at this budget property are -- unsurprisingly -- limited, though they do offer a few perks such as free hotel-wide Wi-Fi and free on-site parking. Area tours and airport transfers can be arranged through the front desk, as can food delivery and same-day laundry service. Breakfast is included in some rates, but it's really just a basic affair of toast and coffee.
