The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat

Set on lush tropical grounds, this luxury resort offers a tranquil and relaxing retreat amid stunning surroundings. The tropical forest terrain is dotted with water features like pools, ponds, waterfalls, and a stream, while limestone hills wreathed in greenery loom overhead. Thatched roof architecture is harmonious with the natural surroundings; the breezy open-air pavilions feature pretty lotus leaf-dotted ponds and greenery climbing up walls and sprouting from planters. Interior decor utilizes natural materials, with lots of wood and wicker pieces as well as bamboo details for an eco-chic effect -- but it's the verdant outdoors that take center stage here. The property attracts people seeking respite, relaxation, and rejuvenation, and the tranquil atmosphere -- thanks in part to a policy prohibiting kids under 12 -- makes for a serene vacation (for those that can afford the steep rates).

The hotel is set on gorgeous, picturesque tropical grounds on the outskirts of Ipoh, the third largest city in Malaysia. Though it's a serene and quiet location that feels remote, it's easy to get to and is within walking distance of a couple of dining options. The hotel neighbors the Lost World of Tambun theme park, which is about a 10-minute walk away. Area attractions like the Sam Poh Tong Temple and the Han Chin Pet Soo museum are about a 25-minute drive away. Penang is about a two-hour drive northwest, while Kuala Lumpur is a bit over a two-hour drive south. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is two-and-a-half hours away.

The hotel offer two types of private villas: Water Villas, which overlook a canal and have balconies right over the water, and the larger Garden Villas that have lovely courtyards. Decor is simply chic, with wooden floors and wood furniture contrasted by white walls. Beds are topped with crisp white linens that complement the room's neutral hues. Large abstract paintings add a bit of color to the spaces.

All villas have large patios or courtyards with private pools (plunge pools in Water Villas; larger pools in Garden Villas) and chic living/dining areas. Wooden decks with sunbeds and umbrellas overlook the water. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, tea/coffee-making facilities, electronic safes, and free Wi-Fi, plus all villas come with butler service. 

Large bathrooms feature rustic sink basins on wooden vanities, as well as separate toilet rooms and walk-in rainfall showers. All villas also have outdoor rainfall showers and sunken whirlpool tubs with natural geothermal hot spring water.

The gorgeous grounds and stunning natural surroundings are the highlights here, with plenty of water features dotted throughout, including, of course, the eponymous geothermal hot springs. There are several hot spring dipping pools to soak in, as well as a thermal steam cave. Other wellness features include an ice bath, a meditation cave, a crystal cave for energy restoration and Reiki sessions, and a Garra Rufa doctor fish pool for leg and feet exfoliation. The spa offers a variety of treatments, and there's also a fitness center on-site, plus guests can partake in free daily yoga classes and other activities. The gorgeous outdoor pool, which is built over a hot spring bed and uses geothermal energy for heating, is set against a stunning backdrop of lush greenery and looming green cliffs. Chic umbrella-shaded padded loungers line the edges, plus there are thatched-roof pavilions with comfortable seating.

The hotel serves healthy and organic fare at Pomelo restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is included in rates. There's also an atmospheric wine bar/restaurant, Jeff's Cellar, set inside a limestone cave that's a guest favorite. Other features include meeting and event space. All guests also receive free entrance to the nearby Lost World Of Tambun, including pick-up/drop-off. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
