Bottom Line

The Avicenna Hotel is a three-and-a-half-pearl property that has an enviable location in the historic district, close to major attractions like the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Decor throughout is traditional and a touch quirky, and may not jibe with all travelers' taste. While the hotel faces the Bosphorus, not all of its 48 guest rooms have the best views. Some have private balconies, but all are comfortable and cozy, with parquet wood floors and minibars. There's a top floor restaurant and bar, along with a pretty breakfast room where a free continental breakfast is served. Compare rates and amenities at the nearby Hotel Amira Istanbul, which adds a small spa and a rooftop terrace.

Avicenna Hotel

Scene

Upper mid-range hotel in a 19th-century house with a central courtyard

Opened in 1990, the hotel occupies a 19th-century house that's actually two wooden buildings separated by a pretty courtyard terrace, which can be accessed from both sides. A covered walkway with latticed railings also connects the two buildings on the second story. The main building has a small lobby that's heavy on traditional decor, with chandeliers hanging from recessed ceilings painted in gold and marble tiled floors. The walls have ornate white-and-gold wallpaper and wainscoting. A seating area has purple and red velvet furnishings, but it's a bit cramped and a poorly planned section of flooring has a glaring seam where the tiles do not align. Halfway down the hall, an open marble staircase provides guests access to other floors (there's no elevator), and there's a lounge in the back of the building with a mirrored wall and high-backed tufted couches.

There are many other hotels located in the immediate vicinity, as well as restaurants, cafes, and shops catering to tourists. Rooms

Traditional and cozy, with parquet wood floors, minibars, and flat-screen TVs

The hotel's 48 rooms are split between the two connected buildings with courtyard or city views, and some have wonderful views of the Bosphorus, though the windows tend to be small. Some have high ceilings, though the rooms with the best views on the top floors have vaulted ceilings. Decor is traditional, and while the overall look is somewhat quirky, spaces are cozy and comfortable, with parquet wood floors and striking red accents. Standard rooms have twin or double beds and small seating areas that have tiny round tables and red slipcovered chairs. Flat-screen TVs are mounted on mirrored wall panels and free Wi-Fi is included. Air-conditioning, minibars and electric kettles come standard, but there are no coffeemakers. Upgraded rooms add furnished balconies with wooden privacy walls and railings, but some need look a bit tired. Some bathrooms are more modern than others, with gray tiles and round basin sinks, while others are more basic and functional. All have either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries.
