Bottom Line

Dosso Dossi Hotel Old City is an upscale, child-friendly property in the center of Istanbul's old city, within easy access of most of its tourist attractions. While rooms are smartly finished with good amenities, some feel cramped and others lack much natural light. The Turkish bath is one of the more impressive hotel hammams in the area, and unusual freebies include milk for kids and evening soup. Overall, the hotel offers pretty good value, but with reports of short beds, taller travelers should probably look elsewhere.

Dosso Dossi Hotel Old City

Scene

Child-friendly hotel with pretty facade and chic interiors

The pleasant white facade adorned with red domed awning and sprays of matching-colored flowers makes a pleasing first impression. Inside, the look is more subdued, and the low-ceilinged lobby is decorated with chic, mid-century modern style furniture and polished marble flooring. This is one of two Istanbul hotels owned by the Dosso Dossi Group (the other being Dosso Dossi Downtown); the group puts a real emphasis on creating a child-friendly environment. This means no shortage of toys, coloring books, and even free milk, making it a popular choice for families with small children. Built in 2013, it's also one of the newer hotels in the area, though as it is spread across three different buildings it can be easy to get lost on the way to your room.

Location

Set in the center of the old city, 10 minutes' walk from Sultanahmet Mosque

The hotel is situated on a sloping cobbled road in the heart of Sultanahmet, with most of the old city's attractions within easy walking distance. The stunning Hagia Sophia Basilica and grand Topkapi Palace are both within five minutes' walk, while the bustling Grand Bazaar is a brisk 10-minute stroll away. The landmark Sultanahmet Mosque (the Blue Mosque) can also be reached on foot in 10 minutes while nearby tram lines connect to the Spice Market in around five minutes (or it's a 15-minute walk). It's a 10-minute walk to Sirkeci train terminal, which connects to Ataturk International Airport in about an hour (with an interchange), or the airport is 45 minutes by cab.

Rooms

Smart rooms with marble bathrooms -- though some are tiny

The hotel has 93 rooms, all of which are decorated in smart contemporary styling with wood paneling, green marble tops, and carpeted floors. Amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, minibars and free Wi-Fi, while Family Rooms include children's games and high chairs. Suites also come with Nespresso machines, iPad docks, and bathrobes, as well as service extras such as free laundry items and shoe shines. Bathrooms are all finished in white marble, though some are tiny. In fact some rooms are also small and those at the back can also feel a little dark. There have also been reports that beds are too short for taller guests.

Features

Large marble Turkish bath, steam room, and sauna

A buffet breakfast (included in the rate) is served in the hotel's Tulip Old City Restaurant, which also offers lunch and dinner menus. As well as presenting guests with a free cocktail on arrival, the hotel also offers soup free of charge in the evenings and milk for guests with young children. Tea and coffee is served in the lobby lounge in the afternoons, while a bar offers nibbles and drinks in the evening. The hotel's main feature, however, is an impressive spa which includes a large traditional Turkish bath -- finished in marble and offering body scrubs and massage -- as well as steam room, sauna, and fitness center.
