Bottom Line

The Sunrise Club is a 14-room budget hotel located across the street from the beach in downtown Negril. Its brightly colored rooms have air-conditioning and private bathrooms, but decor is somewhat dated and furnishings are basic. The Sunrise Club’s Italian owner, Luca, brings a little slice of Italy to Negril with his on-site restaurant, which serves Italian cuisine, brick-oven pizza, and excellent espresso. Because the owner is Italian, the majority of guests at Sunrise Club are also Italian — though there are usually a smattering of Americans as well. In our opinion, Sunrise Club is one of the best budget options around, but some travelers think the on-site dining is too expensive and dislike that the hotel Wi-Fi only works around the bar. The comparably priced Seastar Inn is an alternative with a pool, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi, but it's located in Negril’s West End Cliffs neighborhood, farther from the beach.

Sunrise Club

Scene

A budget-friendly hotel with a largely Italian clientele

If you can hear Italian being shouted across the courtyard, you’ve found the right place. Sunrise Club’s owner, a few of its staff members, and the majority of its guests are from Italy — so the property has a slightly different feel than most in Negril. As one British guest exclaimed — “This is the only place in Jamaica where Italian is more widely spoken than English.”

Sunrise Club’s large central courtyard serves as its lobby, and many guests like to hang around the courtyard, and adjacent restaurant and bar throughout the day. The hotel has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that feels warm and inviting. Some budget hotels in Negril have a slightly sketchy vibe, but Sunrise Club feels perfectly suitable for families, couples, or solo travelers.

Location

Across the street from Seven Mile Beach in Negril

Sunrise Club is located on Norman Manley Boulevard, Negril’s main downtown thoroughfare. It’s across the street from Negril’s famous Seven Mile Beach, and is within walking distance of local shops and restaurants. The hotel is about a 15-minute drive from the West End Cliffs neighborhood, and is about two hours from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Unfortunately, Negril does not have its own international airport.

Rooms

A little dated and well worn, but perfectly clean and suitable for sleeping

There are 14 rooms and multiple room types at the Sunrise Club. The hotel has double, triple, and even quad rooms that are great for groups on a budget. All rooms are painted in bright shades of tropical colors — which can be slightly jarring at first. But besides the bright colors, room decor is a little dated, with old tile floors and plaid bedspreads; some even have wall-mounted tube TVs. There are also signs of age throughout, so don’t be surprised if you sit on a broken chair, or if your bathroom mirror has a few cracks. Furniture is pretty sparse — rooms have simple beds without headboards, wooden closets, and maybe a nightstand here or there. Bathrooms have tiled showers and vanities, and excellent hot water. Guests looking for a room upgrade might like the hotel’s King Rooms in the back of the property. King Rooms are the hotel’s newest room type, and feature king-size beds, flat-screen TVs, and nicer, more modern decor.

Features

No pool, but a great restaurant, and free Wi-Fi around the bar

Sunrise Club’s on-site restaurant is known around Negril for its Italian fare. The restaurant serves speciality pastas, brick oven pizza, and even lobster, but many guests complain prices are expensive. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but breakfast is not included in the nightly room rates. The bar has a large countertop espresso machine, so guests can count on good coffee here. The open-air restaurant and bar are popular with guests and non-guests alike, and there always seems to be someone hanging around in the restaurant’s courtyard — maybe because it’s the only place on property with access to Wi-Fi. Noticeably missing is a swimming pool, though Negril’s famous Seven Mile Beach is just across the street.
