Bottom Line

The Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay is a 505-room, upper-middle-range property geared toward families visiting nearby Tokyo Disney, as it's far from Tokyo tourist attractions. While not one of the six official Tokyo Disney Resorts sitting along the bay, it’s a Disney-partner hotel. Decor is  playful and tasteful -- if not a bit theatrical -- with a pleasant French-villa inspired lobby. Rooms, which can accommodate couples, families, or groups, are similarly pleasant, with eclectic or bright accents that are likely to please kids. On-site facilities include six restaurants and shops, but no on-site fitness center or pool. Guests looking for a touch more luxury -- and a pool --  should check out the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel.

Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay

Scene

Modern with bright, kid-friendly accents and a French-villa-themed lobby

The Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay reflects the atmosphere of its location in the Western-inspired Urayasu area on the outskirts of Tokyo, which lays claim to Tokyo Disney. The tan, square modern building blends in easily with the surrounding area. Disney influence is evident in the rows of marquee lights at the entrance and in the hotel's French-villa inspired lobby designed to mimic an exterior courtyard, complete with a faux-brick facade, fountain, and street lamps. Hallways and elevators offer a spirited, kid-friendly mix of colorful wallpaper and carpeting that changes from area to area. The hotel’s proximity to Tokyo Disney, in addition to its range of large suites and kid-friendly rooms, draws mainly families, although it also has a range of amenities and services for wedding parties and guests too.

Location

Free shuttle takes guests to Disneyland in 15 minutes; three-minute walk to the train

The Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay is in Urayasu, in the Chiba prefecture, outside eastern Tokyo. The building sits on a pristine street surrounded by other hotels and open-air malls filled with restaurants and shops. Urayasu itself, with its wide streets and sidewalks, was reportedly inspired by American cities, so the area has a different ambience than Tokyo proper.

The Oriental Hotel's primary draw is its proximity to Tokyo Disney and Disney Sea, which are one stop away on the train. (The train is connected to the hotel by a covered walkway.) A free shuttle bus also delivers guests to Disney in 15 minutes, and departs every 15 to 20 minutes.

While close to the train, the hotel is not geared toward guests who want to explore central Tokyo -- it takes about an hour to get to popular tourist sights and areas such as Shibuya, Meiji Shrine, and Tokyo Skytree.

  • Three-minute walk to train (Shinurayasu Station, JR Keiyo Line)
  • 15 minutes to Tokyo Disney via public transportation or free shuttle
  • 30 minutes to Tokyo Station via public transportation
  • 40 minutes to Tokyo Haneda Airport via public transportation (25 minutes by car)
  • One-hour to Narita International Airport via public transportation (45 minutes by car)

Rooms

Family-friendly rooms with playful accents

Guest rooms range widely in size and style, which creates plenty of choices for families and groups. Rooms are modern and tasteful, with light-colored walls, white bedding, and carpeting or hardwood floors, but several have added fun features especially designed to appeal to children.

A playful Kiddy Sweet offers fluorescent accents and a long bed tucked behind a “stage” curtain. The Grade Room features bunk beds, while a Baby’s Sweet has such thoughtful details as a child-size giraffe chair and a stool in the bathroom. The Casual Double, Standard, and Superior Rooms are more generic, with standard-issue carpeting and wood furniture, but tastefully jazzed up with accent walls, striped dust ruffles, and floral artwork.

Bathrooms are roomy, even in the more generic Superior Rooms, where they come equipped with large mirrors, tiled floors, marble walls, shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and high-tech Japanese-style toilets. They all offer a range of toiletries.

All guest rooms come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, flat-screen TVs (though the channels are all in Japanese), mini-fridges, and pajamas. Some also include extras like a foot massage machines, irons, and humidifiers.

Guests have complained that Wi-Fi is difficult to pick up in rooms, particularly for international travelers, but the front desk offers modems free of charge, which improve the connection.

Features

Kid-friendly facilities, stylish wedding venue, and several on-site dining choices -- but no pool or fitness center

The hotel offers a range of amenities for families, kids, and wedding parties. There are several dedicated areas for parents and children, including a Mama Salon with couches for moms and small seats and books for kids; a Baby Care Room with cribs; a Kids’ Club with round tables and child-size chairs; a Nursing Room; and a laundry with coin-operated machines. A Kids’ Room off one of the hotel’s restaurants is decorated in animal wallpaper, and has toys and a floor covered in a bright, polka-dot play-mat.

The hotel has six on-site restaurants, including a Chinese restaurant, a Japanese restaurant, an English pub, and a Karaoke Room. A breakfast buffet is available, but it's not included in the room rate, and guests complain it’s pricey.

For brides, there are eight banquet rooms to choose from, some quite elegant, and a large chapel with outdoor terrace, and an on-site bridal salon.

The hotel also has its own convenience store and Disney store, and there are additional shops and restaurants in the nearby shopping plaza.
