Bottom Line

Nestled in the woods, just a short walk from the beach on Georgia's picturesque Jekyll Island, this mid-range hotel is technically a chain, but it offers more perks than the average Hampton Inn. Modern, clean, and new, the hotel is quiet, and the surrounding oak trees make it feel a bit like your own private retreat on Jekyll Island. While there isn't much immediately surrounding the hotel -- except for nature -- guests can walk, drive, or bike to most of the area's attractions and amenities. The rooms are large and decorated in standard chain decor, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs. There's a large pool (although it could use better upkeep) with a poolside snack bar, and a nature path leads to the beach along on a wooden boardwalk. There are also on-site bike rentals and an ample free, hot breakfast in the morning will help fuel the day.

Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island

Scene

Private and peaceful island retreat for tourists and business travelers

Tucked in the woods, the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island feels like a serene retreat in nature. Spanish moss and palm trees flank the entrance, signaling its vacation atmosphere, even for business travelers (the hotel's handful of meeting rooms do attract some conferences). The spacious lobby feels relatively standard for a Hampton Inn, with wood floors and chairs, as well as an all-day coffee bar and extras like books and board games to borrow. The overall feel is quiet and relaxed; the only lively area is the pool, which sometimes has music playing and children splashing.

Location

Off-the-beaten path near the lower tip of Georgia's Jekyll Island, a short walk from the beach

Located in the lower third of Jekyll Island, a southern Georgia island within a state park, the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island gets little traffic and is a quiet escape for tourists and business travelers alike. While there isn't much immediately surrounding the hotel, a quick five- to ten-minute drive (or ride in the hotel's free shuttle) will get you anywhere on the island, including to attractions like the Summer Waves Water Park, Jekyll Island State Park, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and shops and restaurants. It's also worth noting that, while the hotel's grounds are very close to the beach, the hotel is not beachfront; the beach is a couple minutes away via a boardwalk. Parking at the hotel is free.

Rooms

Simple, chain-like, and a bit worn, but clean with modern amenities

The rooms at the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island are standard chain hotel fare, with muted colors and wooden furniture, but they are comfortable and clean, if a bit worn. Every room includes a mini-fridge, microwave, flat-screen TV, and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are large and clean with Neutrogena toiletries and marble countertops, but not all rooms have bathtubs. Higher category rooms have balconies and, although the hotel states that you can book pool-view or beach-view rooms, the pool-facing rooms can be a bit noisy and the beach-view rooms actually look out on trees and dunes.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, business/event spaces, laundry, fitness facilities, pool and hot tub, boardwalk to the beach, bikes to rent

The daily free, hot breakfast is a favorite perk for guests and even includes a do-it-yourself waffle bar for those who don't have time to partake in the buffet, however, you can also get a to-go bag for breakfast. A 24-hour business center has two computers, and there are both interior and patio event spaces for 30-50 people, popular for meetings, parties, and weddings. The fitness center is small, but packs in a lot of equipment for a decent workout. If you would rather be active outside, there's a pool -- although, unfortunately, the surrounding trees mean it's often filled with branches and it doesn't seem to be maintained quite as well as it should be. There's a hot tub, although it's not very warm, and a snack bar at the pool. A 150-yard wooden boardwalk connects the hotel to the beach; chairs and umbrellas are available to rent at the beach, so you don't have to carry them from the hotel. The hotel's on-site bicycle rentals also allow guests to explore the island on two wheels. Coin-operated laundry machines are an added perk.
