Bottom Line

Located on the edges of the Macedonian mainland, the luxurious Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel is truly a wellness destination. Stylish and modern, it has a raved-about spa with facilities open to guests. There's also a plethora of fitness activities, like pilates on the beach and water polo. The 172 classically styled rooms are spacious and outfitted with off-white and jewel tones, and have views of either the gorgeous grounds or the ocean. There's little in the immediate proximity, but the three on-site restaurants, bars, and club, plus great nightly entertainment, offer plenty to do on-site. The beach is sandy and well-supplied with free loungers and umbrellas, and the main pool is spacious. Those who want to be a bit closer to some off-site action should look into the four-pearl Alia Palace Hotel

Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel

Scene

Elegant and modern, Pomegranate is a destination spa resort.

Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel reinterprets traditional design motifs in its architecture and throughout the interiors. The elegant exterior is cubic and rectangular, with softly rounded archways and corners, and it makes a statement from the beginning with a water feature above the wall separating it from the main road. Inside, a sophisticated and traditional feel permeates throughout thanks to polished marble, mostly neutral-tone furnishings, and Greek sculptures and friezes. As far as living up to its name, the hotel has an amazing spa and plenty of wellness and fitness opportunities. It's a great resort to go to to decompress or go off the grid, and it's just as friendly for kids as it is for adults.

Location

Just off a main road and a short drive from the nearby village

Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel is just off a main, but quiet, road, which admittedly isn't the prettiest. It feels secluded from the small village of Nea Potidea, which is a four-minute drive away on an adjacent island and where most of the bars and restaurants are located. Otherwise, there's not a lot to do in the surrounding area. Luckily, there's a market on-site for guests, and drinks generally run quite a bit cheaper there than at the on-site bars. Thessaloniki Airport is about a 40-minute drive away.

Rooms

Classically elegant rooms are spacious and spotless.

The hotel's 172 rooms and suites are spacious and classically elegant in design, decorated in off-whites with pops of jewel tones and warm wood. Not all rooms have sea views -- some of the furnished balconies look out over the gardens -- but the upgrade is worth it. Rooms are extremely well-maintained and have comfy beds with memory-foam mattresses, desks, and wide armchairs, while suites add bigger sitting areas. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, electronic safes, and kettles with stocked capsules and tea bags. The all-white bathrooms are modern and chic, with stylish textured walls, jetted shower/tub combos, hairdryers, bathrobes, slippers, scales, and high-end toiletries. Note that some guests have complained about being able to hear noise from adjoining rooms and the hallway.

Features

An amazing spa, plus great options for wellness, dining, and drinking

True to its name, there's the excellent and elegant Afrodita Roa Spa with some facilities that guests can access for free. Its almost-20,000 square feet encompasses an indoor seawater pool, hammam, salt bath, Kneipp therapy, treatment rooms, saunas, and aromatherapy showers. It's a little expensive, but many guests say that the spa is the best one they've ever used. There are also a ton of fitness activities, from yoga in the gardens to water polo and beach volleyball. The fitness center is fairly large and has weight machines, treadmills, and free weights. As add-ons to the stay, guests can rent e-Bikes, and the hotel can arrange scuba lessons.

The hotel offers three stylish, upscale restaurants, all named after Greek gods: There are the Zeus main buffet restaurant, which is generally good, though some dishes are not always hot; a taverna named for Poseidon serves fresh fish; and the more exclusive Hermes restaurant, which fuses Greek dishes with molecular gastronomy. A pool bar serves casual food along with cocktails and Greek and imported beer and wine.

Three bars are located throughout the property, including a beach bar and a gorgeous main bar with seating "floating" on a small pool. As far as nightlife goes, there are an adult-only club that goes all out with video walls and lasers, and the pool bar also sometimes features entertainment in the evenings, along with a nightly lights show.

The property's pool is large and clean. The sandy beach is gorgeous, though it's a little bit of a walk from the property and up a lot of stairs. However, there's a buggy to transport those with mobility issues and small children. There are usually enough loungers and umbrellas, and lockers for belongings are a nice touch. For all the activities and features geared toward adults, there's plenty for kids staying at the property to do. There's a large separate kids' pool shaped like Mickey Mouse, as well as a kids' club.

Wi-Fi is free and available throughout the property. Parking is also available off the road in front of the hotel.
