The Hanalei Surfboard House colorfully stands out as you drive down the street running parallel to Hanalei Bay. That eye-catching style sets this place apart from the other lodging options in the small town of Hanalei. Its manicured landscaping makes for a nice welcome, but the property's appeal really comes from its suites, which are full of unique collectibles carefully picked out by Simon, the retired record executive who owns the property. The units are private -- each with their own entrance and lawn -- though communal features are slim. Simon is happy to offer tips on the local neighborhood, but the simple kitchenettes and lack of any real social space means that guests are largely left to their own devices. For couples who usually stay at the area's high-end vacation rentals, but prefer something a little more independent and quirky, the Surfboard House is a great alternative. In fact, staying here feels convincingly like being a local, which is exactly why this place books up so quickly. Keep in mind that children aren't allowed. 

The lack of major resorts and hotels in Hanalei is part of its appeal, and it makes the Hanalei Surfboard House a rare find in the area. The property is located on Weke Road, which runs parallel to Hanalei Bay. There are several beach entrances along Weke, and the hotel is closest to the Pine Trees section of the beach. This area is one of the island's best places for beginner surf breaks, though the Pavilion and Grandpa’s sections are within walking distance as well. The property's neighborhood is mostly residential, but a 10-minute walk leads into Hanalei Village, with several shops and restaurants, plus places that rent surfing gear. Popular nearby tourist attractions, such as Tunnels Beach and Ke’e Beach, are a 15-minute drive away to the west, in Haena. While you do need a car to get around the north shore, you can walk to nearly everything in Hanalei when staying at this property, and guests love this spot for its convenience. It will take about 50 minutes to reach the airport by car.

The three suites here are eclectic and artsy. Each ground-level unit has its own private entrance and is thematically decorated with tastefully funky Americana that's reflected in their names: Elvis, Cowgirl, and Love Shack. The look is lived in and full of character, with details like racks of CDs and a wild blend of artwork on the walls. In the Love Shack, Simon (the owner) has added a working 1940s jukebox, and there's an extensive record collection that circles the room along an upper shelf. The Love Shack, is in a separate building where the owner lives upstairs -- it has vaulted ceilings that make it feel extra spacious. All three suites feature air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and simple kitchenettes with coffeemakers, microwaves, mini-fridges, and toasters. Local touches like Kauai-made soaps and Hawaiian coffee are thoughtful, and suites include seating areas and private lawns plus barbecue areas. Even the bathrooms are decorated thematically, with pool balls and dominoes embedded in the tiling. They are roomy and include stall showers, hairdryers, and towels. It's worth noting that daily housekeeping isn't provided, and a hefty one-time cleaning fee is imposed on all stays. 

Travelers looking for the typical hotel amenities will find this property lacking. However, the self-sufficient guests staying here usually use this place as a characterful spot to sleep near the beach. The owner can provide helpful local recommendations -- a bonus for many previous guests. Off-street parking is free, as is Wi-Fi. The property also has boogie boards, beach chairs, and other beach gear that's all free to borrow for guests, and a washer and dryer are available as well.
