This budget, 187-room property across from Kyoto station is centrally located for sightseeing, with easy access to subways and buses. The hotel also provides helpful guides that list popular tourist destinations and how to get to them. Rooms are standard size for Japan (meaning small by Western norms), and windows with frosted glass can make them seem smaller. But Twin Rooms have sitting areas, and all rooms come with individually controlled air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and Wi-Fi. Low on frills, the hotel has few facilities aside from vending machines, a coin-operated laundry, and an information center with computers and a printer; guests can also rent laptops from the front desk. There's a small cafe on-site, and a simple Japanese breakfast is included in the room rate.
Scene
Basic, no-frills hotel in a convenient location
Hotel Hokke Club Kyoto is a basic, generic-looking tourist and business hotel with a pleasant lobby and cafe. Seating areas are clustered near racks holding maps and sightseeing information, as well as Japanese and English-language newspapers. Potted plants and colorful flower arrangements liven up the space, but the patterned wall-to-wall carpets and standard navy-and-gray armchairs and couches give little atmosphere. And aside from the uninviting lobby, there's no other space for guests to gather.
Location
Located across from Kyoto station, near restaurants, buses, and trains
The hotel is located across from Kyoto station, with easy access to restaurants and shops in the underground station -- Starbucks and McDonald’s are both around the corner. The hotel is also next to Kyoto Tower and its observation deck. Bus tours leave from the opposite side of the station, and attractions are a short ride away -- the Gion Geisha District can be reached in about a 15-minute bus trip, and the Fushimi Inari Shrine is a 25-minute trip. Osaka International Airport is about a 50-minute drive, or about an hour by bus from the hotel.
Rooms
Basic rooms with opaque windows
Hotel Hokke Club Kyoto's 187 rooms are clean and simple. The bare white walls have light-wood trim, and the basic furniture includes a nightstand and a desk. Beds are covered in plush white duvets. Twin Rooms have seating areas with small couches, although some rooms can be a tight fit, and the frosted glass windows don’t let in much light. All rooms come with individually controlled air-conditioning, coffee- and tea-making facilities, older flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, Wi-Fi, yukatas, and slippers. Bathrooms are small, with half-moon sinks and curtained shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries, including hairbrushes, razors, and toothbrushes with toothpaste.
