Hotel La Perla

Tremezzina, Lombardy, Italy

Nestled on the hillside overlooking Lake Como and Tremezzo, the 20-room Hotel La Perla is a welcoming boutique hotel with a tranquil garden of olive and myrtle trees. Stunning views of the water and surrounding mountains are available from the rooms, the pool deck, and the hotel terrace. A free daily breakfast buffet comes with a variety of both hot and cold items, and Wi-Fi and parking are both free. Drinks are served at the hotel’s cozy bar each evening and basic pasta dishes are served for dinner. The hotel owners are happy to make recommendations for nearby restaurants that can be reached by ferry boat. There’s a free shuttle bus service that operates on fixed times from the hotel and the ferry dock in Tremezzo.

Hotel Garni Corona

Menaggio, Lombardy, Italy

While Hotel La Perla is up on a hill (about a 20-minute walk away from the lake, town, and public transportation), the three-pearl Hotel Garni Corona is situated right on Menaggio's main piazza, which borders Lake Como. It's close to the town's restaurants and cafes -- guests are spoiled for choice -- and everything in town is within walking distance. Garni Corono's 24 spacious rooms are all spacious (the triple, quadruple, and multi-level rooms especially so) and come with mini-fridges, wall-mounted flat-screen satellite TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is included and delicious, though that's the extent of facilities offered (no pool or restaurant, like Hotel La Perla).

3

Hotel Belvedere Bellagio

Bellagio, Lombardy, Italy

Hotel Belvedere is a three-pearl property with stunning views of Lake Como from Bellagio’s peaceful hilltop outskirts. Family-owned since 1880, the hotel has heaps of Italian charm and packs in extensive facilities like a heated outdoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, Turkish bath, gym, and spa. The 62 air-conditioned rooms feature a mix of classic and modern decor; most have lake-view balconies. Four private one- to three-bedroom apartments -- with private entrances and full kitchens -- are great options for families. All rooms come with flat-screen cable TVs, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and safes. The hotel offers a free buffet breakfast and a pleasant restaurant serving seasonal local meals. Both Hotel La Perla and Hotel Garni Corona have significantly lower rates, but they lack a gym or spa.

4

Hotel Metropole Bellagio

Bellagio, Lombardy, Italy

The 42-room Hotel Metropole Bellagio is a mid-range hotel with a lakefront location on Lake Como. The hotel has stunning views of the lake and mountains from the rooms, on-site restaurant, and rooftop sun terrace. Additional features include a snack bar, ice cream parlor, and a concierge desk that sets up excursions, as well as free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Purportedly the oldest hotel in Bellagio, Metropole has an elegant and romantic style but also modern conveniences -- such as flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and safes -- in the rooms. There are also triple and family-size rooms with additional beds. The hotel does get some complaints of noise due to its location; parents hoping for a quieter spot might prefer Hotel Belvedere Bellagio.
