The Burnside Hotel

The Best Western Burnside Hotel is a chain hotel in a charming building that was a former lakeside residence. Situated on a small hill, the hotel has lawns and gardens -- with terrace seating areas -- that overlook the woodlands and Lake Windermere in the distance. The original old-world designs of the residence have been retained. The interiors are in harmony with the English countryside, featuring lovely moldings, bay windows, and fireplaces in the numerous lounges. The lounge near the main staircase features plaid carpeting, comfy seating options, and a log fireplace. Some interior designs, like the front desk and red carpeted hallways, lack character and feel like a chain hotel.

Located on a small street in Bowness, the hotel is quick drive to sites in the Lake District. Lake Windermere Cruises is 14 minutes on foot or four minutes by car. Lakeland Motor Museum, featuring a collection of motorcycles, is 15 minutes away by car. It’s a 10-minute walk to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, an interactive exhibit that celebrates the author’s works. The historic Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway is a 16-minute drive. It’s a three-minute drive to the Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House. Windermere Canoe and Kayak is 14 minutes away on foot.

Patterned wallpaper, floral prints, and classic wood furniture make rooms feel homey. The hotel offers double, twin, and family rooms. There are also lake and penthouse suites. Some guests have complained about outdated and worn decor in some rooms. Balconies, furnished with plastic patio furniture, are available. All rooms include coffee/tea makers, flat-screen TVs, writing desks, safes (for a fee), and trouser presses. Penthouse suites have wool carpeting, large balconies, and views of Lake Windermere. Some rooms have small sitting areas and stereos with remotes. Most bathrooms have shower/tub combos and heated towel racks. Old-fashioned tiles and fixtures in some bathrooms feel dated.

Contemporary meeting rooms -- three of which have lake views -- are available for conferences or private functions for between 10 to 120 people. There's the Ebor Suite, Bay Room, Bower Room, and the Sun Lounge. Audiovisual equipment is available.

There are also two restaurants and the Harleys Bar, which is small and traditional. Afternoon tea and dining is available on the garden terrace, weather permitting. Room One O One restaurant serves dinner in a private lounge. Silhouettes restaurant features heavily patterned black and white wallpaper, black chandeliers, leather chairs, and large windows that have garden views.

Hotel guests have access to the leisure center at Parklands Country Club. There’s a small gym and indoor pool that appeals to families, with a kids' pool and a hot tub. The deck offers casual plastic patio furniture and a chest full of pool toys. There's also a spa with locker rooms, a sauna, and steam room. Goggles, armbands, and swimming diapers can be purchased in the hotel. Renovations on the leisure center began in 2014 and will continue in 2015.
