Grasmere Hotel

Scene

A cozy country estate, with traditional furniture and pops of modern decor

The Grasmere Hotel is an intimate three-story country getaway geared toward couples. Built in 1871 as a Victorian country estate, the hotel features a gravel driveway, pitched roof windows, a stone exterior, and a traditionally designed interior, with bursts of contemporary decor. Guests are often personally welcomed to the hotel with tea and cake, and leave knowing the staff on a first-name basis.

The lounge is decorated in red striped sofas, contemporary green chairs, antiques, fireplaces, and portrait paintings are hung on the walls. The staircase is covered in blue carpeting and features intricate wood railings. Windows overlook the charming interior garden, which offers wooden patio furniture. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and romantic.

Location

Along River Rothay in the countryside

The hotel is on the outskirts of Grasmere and situated along River Rothay, near the M6 expressway. The hotel’s country landscape and gardens make it feel secluded. But it’s a quick walk to town, where there are pubs, restaurants, and shops. There are also walking trails reachable from the hotel. The Lakes Art gallery and the Heaton Cooper art studio are within a few minutes walking distance. A food co-op and pharmacy are a one-minute walk away. The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, built in the 1630s, is four minutes away on foot. The Lake District National Park is 36 minutes by car.

Classically furnished Standard, Deluxe, and Superior rooms offer a fusion of traditional and modern decor. Nightstands that look like suitcases are a fun touch. Instead of numbers, rooms have names: Beatrix, De Quincey, Shelley, Coleridge, Dorothy, Ruskin, Walpole, Wordsworth, Judith, Herries, and Southey. Contemporary touches like flat-screen TVs complement homey furnishings. All rooms have carpeting, free Wi-Fi, and electric kettles. Bathrooms have stylish marble tiles, modern fixtures, heated towel racks, rainfall showerheads (in some), and shower/tub combos with modern fixtures. Garden views are offered in some. Ground floor rooms are available. Guests complain, though, that space is limited in single rooms.
