Bottom Line

Fresh from 2016 refurbishments, the Labranda Alyssa Suite Hotel is an upper-middle-range property in Playa Blanca's outskirts. Given its remote location, all-inclusive packages here are a pro, and good features include three pools (one for kids), tennis and games areas, and a buffet restaurant. Self-contained bungalows form the 120 Suites, which are smartly outfitted with nautical themes, flat-screen TVs, and AC. Views are charming from both private patios and the restaurant's shaded dining terraces. Peace and quiet here is guaranteed, although high-speed Wi-Fi, less-so. Families looking to be more central should check out H10 Lanzarote Princess, which is nearer beaches, and on the main drag.

LABRANDA Alyssa Suite Hotel

Scene

Peaceful complex with outdoor pools, popular with calm-seeking couples and families

The Labranda's 2016-refurbished layouts are a change from Lanzarote's often rundown properties. Flower- and cacti-filled paths dividing bungalows are well-maintained, and low-rise stone structures contrast blackened earth against humbling volcanic backdrops. Palms surround outdoor pools, and though waters are chilly, they're pleasant and popular spaces to lounge. Interiors have a serene blue-and-white color scheme, plus lots of sleek wood, chic hanging lamps, and cool geometric prints and wall decor. Ocean-facing terraces at the buffet eatery and thatched-roof pool bar are solidly Mediterranean. Choosing to avoid noise and animation-packed resorts, British and European guests are here for the quiet, friendly atmosphere, good food and posh feel that make this property a cut above the rest.

Location

Amid volcanic red mountains and near a charming seafront promenade

The hotel's remote location enhances tranquility, though it isn't for everyone. Some other complexes surround it, but the immediate area is somewhat isolated, although nearby "fire" mountains are atmospheric. A few restaurants at the oceanfront promenade are a 10-minute walk away, and coastal walks from here are great in either direction. Although long, 50-minute walks east to Marina Rubicon's fancy yachts and twice-weekly markets are just as scenic as to the west, where similar walking times lead to a beautiful lighthouse. A bus stop at the next door hotel shortens these journeys, and taxis are generally cheap. Playa Flamingo is a 20-minute walk, while Aqualava water park is six minutes closer. Timanfaya National Park's dormant volcanoes are a 24-minute drive. Lanzarote Airport is 30 minutes by car.

Rooms

Chic suites with bright living rooms and AC, plus sunny private patios

Chic, streamlined rooms have an ocean theme in their blue and gray bedrunners, drapes, and throw pillows, which is toned down by sleek wood paneling and furniture. Asymmetric hanging lamps, cheerful wall quotes, and marina photography are fun accents. Living areas have plush sofas and lead to sunny, spacious private patios with dining furniture and loungers, plus garden or sea views . Smart bathrooms have walk-in showers that occasionally flood floors, as well as toiletries and hairdryers. Standard amenities include satellite flat-screen TVs, AC, phones, desks, and mini-fridges, but no tea- or coffee-making facilities are provided. All can be fitted with cribs, and safes require a fee. Wi-Fi is free, but unreliable in bungalows.

Features

Outdoor pools with adjacent bar and games areas, plus a popular buffet restaurant

Having come for serenity, guests aren't phased by the limited (but still solid) amenities. Two freeform pools are large, and brown and white loungers around them blend nicely on terra-cotta terraces under tall palms. Note, pool towels can incur small fees. Lifeguards are on-hand, and a kiddy pool gives little ones their own space. Guests find little difference between the heated and unheated pools, but atmosphere is warm at the cabana pool bar, where sandwiches and hot dogs are popular. Sun-worshippers can cool off with ice cream and drinks, but only premium-package guests get free branded liquors.

The single-manned kids' club has no schedule, but younger guests can keep busy at the playground. Tennis and beach volleyball courts are also available, as are worn-looking table tennis, air hockey, and a pool table. For a classier shaded spot, the stylish restaurant has outdoor seating with ocean views, plus indoor dining sets on lovely patterned tile floors. From breakfasts with made-to-order omelets and pancakes, to lunch and dinner options of pizza, pasta, soup, and salad, the buffet is a varied scene. Evening karaoke and quiz nights are reportedly mediocre, and unfortunately, there are no gym or spa facilities. Car and bike rentals are great for venturing farther afield, and parking is free. Pets are not permitted. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but the signal can be hit or miss in bungalows.
