Jockey Club

Built in 1974, the mid-range Jockey Club is a timeshare property that offers competitive rates and a great Vegas Strip location, making it a good option for those who don't mind staying (or prefer to stay) in a non-casino hotel. Interiors are low-key: there's no Vegas excess to be found here. The style is contemporary but a bit bland and dated: the lobby is clad in earthy neutrals and, in a nod to the hotel's name, subtle equestrian touches such as horse paintings are dotted throughout. Clusters of seating in the lobby include russet-colored armchairs and comfortable sofas, while potted greenery throughout add a soothing touch. Note that this hotel is one of few in the area that doesn't charge a resort fee.

The hotel occupies a prime Vegas Strip location, neighboring the Bellagio and across the street from Planet Hollywood. It's a great central base that makes for a convenient stay, and while many attractions are within walking distance, taxis are also easy to find at virtually any time of day and night. There's also a double-decker bus called the Deuce that runs up and down the strip 24 hours a day, seven days a week, plus a monorail system, which stops at MGM Grand, Bally's/Paris, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the Hilton.  Other area attractions include the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, which takes about seven minutes to reach by car. The Neon Museum -- which has a collection of old Las Vegas signs -- is a 15-minute drive from the property. Downtown Las Vegas, where guests can visit the busker-filled Fremont Street Experience, is also about a 15-minute trip, while McCarran International Airport is less than a 10-minute drive from the hotel. Travelers that want to venture farther have about a 50-minute drive to the Hoover Dam, while the Grand Canyon can be reached in around four-and-a-half hours.

The hotel offers spacious suites in studio and one- and two-bedroom configurations. They're unassuming and bland in terms of decor, but make for a convenient stay. Cream-colored walls and dark patterned carpets provide a backdrop to sleek, dark-wood furnishings, while dark paisley-patterned bedspreads and patterned sofas in the living areas make the rooms feel dated. All units have flat-screen TVs, DVD players, air-conditioning, irons/ironing boards, and free Wi-Fi. One-and Two-Bedroom Suites have full kitchens equipped with four-burner stoves, ovens, full-sized fridges, coffeemakers, microwaves, dishwashers, and toasters. Studios have kitchenettes with microwaves, coffeemakers, toasters, and mini-fridges. Bathrooms are plain, with granite-topped wooden sink vanities and shower/tub combos with older fixtures. Individual toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

This hotel lacks a casino and on-site dining options, but there are plenty of places to eat in the immediate area. On-site features include a spacious and well-equipped fitness center, with a good variety of cardio and strength-training machines, including treadmills and ellipticals. There are also a hot tub and sauna here. Guests have access to an outdoor pool that's shared with the neighboring Cosmopolitan Hotel. Other features include a shop in the lobby that sells snacks, drinks, souvenirs, and all sorts of sundries. Coffee and popcorn are available for free throughout the day. There's also a lending library full of DVDs, books, magazines, and games. Shuttle service runs to a couple of outlet malls and grocery stores, and on-site parking is free. Wi-Fi is free throughout and there are four computers for guest use in the lobby.
