Bottom Line

With its Bavarian architecture and family-run hospitality, the mid-range Hotel Pension Anna creates a convincing Alpine lodge experience in the heart of Leavenworth. Its 20 rooms, decorated with imported Old World furnishings, seem lifted straight out of another time and place. The breakfast room, decked in light pinewood, has an authentic atmosphere for guests looking to immerse themselves in Leavenworth's Germanic heritage. A handful of suites are housed in a separate building -- Pension Mischi -- both buildings are on a quiet block near quaint shops and restaurants. The much larger Bavarian Lodge nearby also has a pub and an outdoor pool.

Hotel Pension Anna

Scene

Small bed-and-breakfast with authentic Alpine atmosphere

Styled after an Alpine chalet and small German pensions, Hotel Pension Anna delivers on both Bavarian charm and the simple pleasures of the quaint lodgings that inspired it. From the outside, timber framing and weathered wooden balconies look straight out of the Black Forest. The couple who own the hotel imported their furnishings from Austria and Germany, including ornate pieces in the small lobby that immediately heighten the Old World vibe. The hotel renovated an adjacent old church into a large multi-level suite, and the property includes another building across the street, creating the impression of a small village. Like most bed-and-breakfasts, guests here are generally mature couples, though some families pass through as well.

Rooms

Charming Bavarian decor with imported furnishings

The small hotel has 20 rooms, including four suites across the street in the separate Pension Mischi building. The old church on the property was also renovated and turned into the large Alte Kappelle Suite, complete with a loft and pious-looking dark-wood furniture. Most rooms open onto small wooden balconies that give the building its iconic Alpine look. Each of the carpeted rooms is individually decorated with a mix of traditional pinewood cabinets and ornate, hand-painted imports, though the suites have more contemporary decor. Most have sitting areas, with some adding fireplaces. All rooms include free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. The bathrooms have black-and-white tile floors and either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. Upgraded rooms have jetted tubs, and some have in-room whirlpool tubs. Keep in mind that there are no elevators and some rooms require climbing stairs to reach.
