Stonover Farm Bed and Breakfast

The Stonover Farm Bed and Breakfast’s turn-of-the-century buildings are painted brown with turquoise trim and surrounded by trees. Ducks, wild turkeys, and resident Siamese cats wander the 10-acre property, which is dotted with willow trees and has a picturesque pond. Owners Tom and Suky Werman settled in the Berkshires to run this intimate property after over two decades of living in Los Angeles. Tom, who produced rock records for Cheap Trick and Twisted Sister, can now be seen whipping up his signature Tomlette for guests in the kitchen of the main house, which was built in 1890. Interiors combine New England country charm with elegant contemporary decor and are filled with bookshelves, fireplaces, and comfortable sofas in its two sitting rooms. Unlike other bed-and-breakfasts, this property attracts a mixed demographic. Weddings, auctions, and other events are also often held in the charming hay barn. 

This relaxed country retreat in the Berkshires is located on Under Mountain Road, a good route for walks and runs. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Tanglewood, an outdoor music venue where the Boston Symphony Orchestra performs in the summer. Cafes, markets, shops, and restaurants in downtown Lenox are a five-minute drive away. It’s a 10-minute drive to Pleasant Valley’s hiking trails. The Mount -- Edith Wharton’s home -- is a 10-minute drive from the hotel, while the Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire Museum, and the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy are about 15 to 20 minutes by car. Traveling to the Berkshires from Boston takes a little over two hours by car and Manhattan is two hours and 30 minutes away. 

You won’t find the typical old-fashioned floral bedspreads and antiques that outfit so many bed-and-breakfasts in these rooms. Stonover Farm puts a modern spin on country style with neutral textiles, sharp furnishings, and large windows that overlook the gardens and/or duck pond. There are five units in total, and the entire property can only accommodate 14 guests at a time. Expect to see dark hardwood floors, plush white bedding, and artful touches like landscape photographs or sculptural nightstands. Three rooms, each with a separate sitting area, are in the main house. Suite One is on the second floor and Suite Three is at the front, offering a window seat. Suite Two is the biggest room and has a fireplace and a whirlpool tub. The two-bedroom Rock Cottage offers a full kitchen, a living room with a fireplace, and porch, while the 1850-built School House has 11-foot-tall ceilings, a patio, and a whirlpool tub. Nicely designed bathrooms have showers or shower/tub combos alongside marble vanities, antique-style fixtures, and high-end toiletries. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docks, and air-conditioning.

The farm’s charming and rustic hay barn is a popular wedding and event venue, fitting up to 200 people. An event tent and space by the duck pond are also available for parties or receptions. A rotating art gallery in the barn is a fun perk for guests to peruse in their leisure time, and much of the art throughout the property is for sale. Owner Tom serves the free cooked-to-order breakfast in the dining room that features a skylight above a wooden banquet table. French doors from the main dining room lead to seating and a barbecue grill on the patio that overlooks the duck pond. Wine and cheese are also free for guests in the afternoons. Guests can borrow DVDs from a free library with 250 movies. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
