Bottom Line
The 12-room mid-range Villa Margherita by the Sea is a family-run bed-and-breakfast in the quaint village of Levanto, just a five-minute walk from the town center and beach. Classic rooms have en-suite bathrooms plus flat-screen TVs, and some have terraces with wonderful town views. The historic hotel has an additional lovely terrace for all guests to use and a handsome garden as well. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and on-site parking (a rarity in this part of Italy) are all free. There are no elevators here, though, and steps encompass the property, which may pose a problem for guests with mobility issues.

A historic, quaint bed-and-breakfast with gorgeous outdoor spaces
Brick steps lead to the Villa Margherita by the Sea: a yellow, classic Italian villa built in 1906 with a family-run, friendly atmosphere. The small, traditional lobby is mostly functional, with a wood front desk, and antique touches like a pendulum wall clock add to the hotel’s character. Blue-and-white printed tile plus fresh flowers make the breakfast room feel homey, and there are marble stairs, red-and-white checkerboard floors, and classic photos throughout the property. While some rooms have private terrace access, there is a beautiful terrace for all guests to use that's laden with shrubs and vine-covered walls, as well as a lovely garden, and both have an intimate, private atmosphere. Guests are primarily couples, though some families stay here as well.

Rooms
Homey and vintage, with private ensuite bathrooms; some have terraces
Charming, individually decorated rooms have an antique feel with traditional patterned tile and floral fabrics throughout. Metal bed frames and bedside lights with flower lampshades make the rooms feel like home, and all have air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Most rooms have solid wood furniture with classical lines, like desks and wardrobes, and black-and-white photos on the walls. Some rooms have terraces with gorgeous town views while the Red Diamond Apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen (stove, oven, washing machine, full-size refrigerator, dishwasher) and a private garden. En-suite bathrooms also have a vintage style. Some have plain blue-and-white tiling while others have colorful floral designs. All offer hairdryers and heated towel racks as well as stand up showers and generic toiletries. There are no tubs available, though.
Features
Loads of freebies -- from breakfast and Wi-Fi to parking and train station pick-up
For a bed-and-breakfast, this hotel offers a surprising number of freebies. A wide selection of foods including fruits, meats, pastries, hard boiled eggs, and yogurt are served at the free breakfast, a major highlight for guests. There are no other meals served on site. Yellow couches in addition to a flat-screen TV are provided in the lounge, and the terrace garden is a particularly lovely place to relax. The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. Free train station pick-up plus free Wi-Fi are offered as well as free outdoor and garage parking, almost unheard of in the area. Room service is available, but has limited hours.
