Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Casa do Patio B&B in the south side of central Lisbon is a solid pick for couples or families with older children who want to embrace Portuguese culture in a hospitable, intimate environment. Although getting to Casa do Patio involves a hike up a steep, narrow street (a common obstacle in Lisbon), the hotel has several charming amenities including an outdoor terrace with sun loungers, a free breakfast in a pretty, bright breakfast room, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms range from Standard, cozy rooms for two, to Apartments complete with kitchenettes. Bathrooms are on the small side.

Casa do Patio by Shiadu

Scene

Warm and inviting bed-and-breakfast with pretty terrace

Casa do Patio B&B is a charming property with a lovely courtyard where guests lounge in warm weather, drink coffee, chat with friends on laptops, or just soak up the Portuguese ambiance. The entrance to the property goes directly into the kitchen, where sticky notes are posted all over the cupboards in at least a dozen languages, thanking the owners of the property for their hospitality. The kitchen/breakfast area has a large wooden table and several smaller tables leading into a dining room with a slightly more formal large dining table. There is a sunny lounge indoors, but guests definitely migrate towards the terrace, complete with sun loungers, when the weather is cooperating. Overall, this is a welcoming and charming property that offers a glimpse into Portuguese life.

Location

On a steep street in the Santa Catarina neighborhood

Nestled into a quiet residential area high on a narrow street, Casa do Patio is located in the Santa Caterina area of Lisbon’s city center. There are several restaurants and cafes and a few bars within a 10-minute walk, plus a McDonalds. The Bairro Alto is a 10-minute walk away and the heart of the historic center is about 20 minutes away. Cais do Sodre station, from which trains come and go throughout the country and elsewhere in Europe, is a 16-minute walk away. The Lisbon Portela Airport is 16 minutes away by car or taxi or less than 30 by bus on the 208 line.

Rooms

Ranging from cozy Standard rooms to spacious Apartments, all with tight bathrooms

There is a variety of rooms at Casa do Patio, from the rather compact Standards with limited space between the foot of the bed and wall (but with a large, comfortable bed and a corner seating area) to the fully equipped apartments with kitchenettes, two bedrooms, a living room, and dining area (with a welcoming bowl of fresh fruit on the table). All rooms are immaculately clean and colorful with interesting original paintings hanging on walls and cool antique-style furniture. The bathrooms are definitely compact, however, with stand-up rain showers and a small sink that almost hangs over the toilet. There is free Wi-Fi access in every room, a flat-screen cable TV, safe, and hairdryer.

Yummy, authentic breakfasts and free Wi-Fi

The free breakfasts are one of the best features at Casa do Patio. They include homemade jam, crepes, and Portuguese French toast. There is also the spectacular patio with several tables and chairs for relaxing in warm weather, free Wi-Fi access in rooms and throughout the property, coffee, tea and snacks available all day, rooms equipped with kitchenettes and washing machines, and a truly hospitable staff that can arrange taxi and restaurant reservations. Unfortunately, there isn't a dedicated parking area nearby.
