Bottom Line

Ideal for tourists, the mid-range Hotel Borges is priced well considering its superb location in one of Lisbon’s most iconic neighborhoods. The property is within walking distance to most of the city’s historic attractions, like the Chiado Museum. Rooms are small and basic but clean and mostly modern, as the hotel underwent a renovation in 2014. The breakfast hall is a thing of beauty -- classic and ornate with massive crystal chandeliers. The Borges is also one of the only hotels in Lisbon’s old town with free parking, though there's a charge for Wi-Fi.

Hotel Borges Chiado

Scene

Mix of contemporary and classic motifs

Renovated in 2014, the Borges Chiado’s look is an eclectic mix of modern and classic motifs. The small reception area is super contemporary with black and white striped tile floors, a lighted white vinyl desk, and an assortment of interesting wall accents, from ancient stones to mosaic paintings to black and white prints. Hallways feature wood floors and prints in plastic frames. The most striking area of the hotel is the breakfast hall with its ornately textured ceiling, gold accents, and beautiful hanging crystal chandeliers. In contrast, the tables and chairs are simple and old.

Location

Smack in the middle of old town's Chiado Square

The Borges Chiado is found in the Estremadura area -- one of the most iconic neighborhoods in Lisbon -- on a pedestrian-only cobblestone street. Nearly all of the city’s historic attractions are within easy walking distance. The hotel is surrounded by bakeries, restaurants, ice cream shops, churches, luxury shops, and historic theaters. Other neighborhoods are nearby, including Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré. The metro (Baixa / Chiado) and taxi are right outside of the property as well. The Chiado Warehouses, a shopping destination, are less than a five-minute walk east, while Mario Viegas Theatre and the Chiado Museum are also several minutes away by foot. Lisbon Portela Airport is 20 minutes north by car or 25 to 40 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Small rooms that are clean and mostly updated

The Borges Chiado has a variety of guest units, and all but the Individual Rooms have been updated with fresh linens, curtains, and contemporary furniture. That said, rooms are basic and simple with flat-screen satellite TVs mounted on walls, nightstands with shaded lamps, mini-fridges, and safes. Double- and queen-size beds are twins pushed together. Wi-Fi can be accessed for an extra daily fee and use of safes requires a small fee as well. All units have doors leading to small standing balconies overlooking the street, which can get noisy at night. Updated bathrooms feature attractive square tiling and large rain showerheads. The sinks, though cute and modern, are tiny.
