Bottom Line

The 137-room Hotel Eduardo VII is an affordable three-pearl hotel located in the city center, right by the Marques de Pombal roundabout.  Rooms -- although decorated in an outdated designs -- come with safes, minibars, and small TVs; some have city views. The restaurant and bar terrace offers city views from the 10th floor and there's a charming (albeit dated) billiards room. For those willing to pay slightly more, the HF Fenix Urban offers simple, but undoubtedly more modern, furnishings.

Hotel Eduardo VII

Scene

Affordable tourist hotel with old-fashioned interiors

The mid-range Hotel Eduardo VII has seemingly been preserved from the 1950s when it was built. Wooden paneling, vinyl seating, and a recessed circular ceiling light in the lobby contribute to a certain retro charm, which is augmented by funky decorations, including greyhound dog sculptures and vases. The 12-story building sits on a corner with a small black hotel sign that can easily be missed. Hallways have red carpeting and gold trimmed doors and there are elevators, but they are small and old. Most guests are budget-minded couples and families.

Location

Situated beside the Marques de Pombal roundabout

Located on a busy multi-lane road in the heart of Lisbon, the hotel is conveniently on the same block as the Parque Metro Station and right by the Parque Eduardo VII. Surrounding the property are other hotels, businesses, and a few restaurants. Old Town Chiado -- with the Santa Justa Elevator, shopping and dining -- is a 15-minute subway ride away, while reaching the nightlife in the Bairro Alto takes 20 minutes. The Lisbon Cathedral and Praca de Comercio on the Tagus River are also 20 minutes by public transportation. Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower are a 20-minute drive or 40-minute bus trip. Lisbon Portela Airport is 20 minutes away by car or taxi.

Rooms

Old-fashioned rooms with minibars and safes; some with city views

Rooms have old-fashioned decor that’s showing some wear, but mostly clean, with wooden or rattan headboards and striped or damask textiles. Some windows have city views, others look out onto other buildings. While all rooms have TVs, some have tube TVs as opposed to flat-screen units. All rooms have minibars, safes, irons/ironing boards, and tea kettles. Tiled bathrooms have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and bidets. Triple Rooms are available and suitable for families, with either one double bed and one single bed or three single beds. Suites have the same dated furnishings, but offer more space along with bathrobes, wooden floors, and separate living rooms.

Features

Restaurant and bar with city views, meeting space, billiards room, business center, and free Wi-Fi

The standout feature at Hotel Eduardo VII is its 10th-floor Varanda Restaurant, a circular, classically decorated dining area with a glass-enclosed terrace and panoramic city views. Next door, the Lanterna Bar and terrace has an English pub atmosphere with wooden-paneled walls adorned with a royal crest, plus green leather chairs.

The Avenida Living Room offers comfy -- but dated -- lounge furniture and a billiards table. There's also a meetings space -- the Parque Room -- that can be rented out for private meetings and functions. Audiovisual equipment, banquet services, and secretarial assistance are also available. The Pateo Room has white furniture and a skylight. There's also a casual business center with a PC, a printer, and small meeting table, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the proeprty. Parking isn’t available on-site, but the hotel has an agreement with the nearby Marques de Pombal Parking, which offers spaces for a fee.
