Bottom Line

In a former palace dating back to the 17th century, the 12-room Palacio Ramalhete AL is a charming, upscale bed-and-breakfast with lots of character. The inn has three lovely outdoor patio areas with greenery, tables, and chairs where guests can enjoy the buffet breakfast or lounge throughout the day, weather permitting. There are more features than one may expect from such a small property, including a heated outdoor pool and a cozy, rustic bar. Rooms are elegant and have been beautifully restored; some feature original tile work and river views. The only significant downside to the inn is its slightly out-of-the-way location; it’s near the Museum of Ancient Art and the Tagus River, but a 20-minute walk from the lively Bairro Alto area. LX Boutique Hotel is an upscale hotel that's 10 minutes closer to the action, but it lacks the pool found here.

Palacio Ramalhete

Scene

Beautiful, upscale bed-and-breakfast with illustrious palatial past

Palacio Ramalhete AL was a former city palace owned by the Taborda family who held the titles of Dukes of Palmela and Counts of Póvoa. Several European cultural and historical figures have visited the palace. Today the upscale inn has been restored with gorgeous wooden floors, colorful Portuguese tiles, and fresco ceilings. There’s a small reception area at an antique-style desk in a room with hunter green doors with transom windows. Hallways are charming with lantern lights and black-and-white framed photos. The inn has pretty outdoor patio areas with vines growing on courtyard walls and bistro tables where guests can relax or enjoy breakfast. There’s also a small, cozy bar inside with wooden barstools and black tables and chairs. Overall this property has the feeling of a romantic retreat or of staying in a stylish private home.
