Bottom Line

Pensao Praca da Figueira is a tiny hotel located conveniently close to a metro station and to a pick-up point for sightseeing tours and airport shuttles. The nine rooms are colorful but dated (some even have tube TVs), and some share bathrooms in the hallway. Breakfast is included in the room rates and gets good reviews for the variety of foods on offer. There’s no elevator, though, so guests who aren’t prepared to climb several flights of stairs may want to look elsewhere. Travelers willing to pay a little more may want to look into staying at Artbeat Rooms, a cozy seven-room B&B in Baixa with vibrant artist-themed accommodations.

Pensao Praca da Figueira

Scene

Historic building with a mix of old and new decor

The pension is housed in a historic old building tucked away in an alleyway. Inside, the reception is surprisingly modern, with chic black-and-silver wallpaper juxtaposed against a bold, yellow wall. Sleek black couches offer a spot to sit and watch the large flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. There's also a shared living room with lavender and white walls decorated with black-and-white photos. A couch and two bean bag chairs provide spots to sit and watch the flat-screen TV. Stairways and hallways are comparatively more dated, with old iron railings, salmon-pink steps, and parquet floors. Breakfast is served in a charming space with yellow walls, whimsical globe-shaped basket ceiling lights, a big city mural, and views of the lively Figueira Square.

Location

Next to a historic square with plenty of transportation options

The hotel is located next to Figueira Square, where airport shuttles and sightseeing buses depart. It’s also a quick walk to the Rossio Square metro station, making for an easy commute to most of the city. There are plenty of restaurants and shops near the hotel, and Bairro Alto, a neighborhood known for its nightlife, is within a 15-minute walk. However, the immediate entrance to the hotel is in an alleyway that can be dark and intimidating at night. The airport can be reached in 17 minutes by car or about 25 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Colorful rooms with shared or private bathrooms

The nine rooms at the hotel come in a variety of color and variations. Decor is dated and includes textured popcorn walls and old wooden headboards. Loud, garishly painted walls and fussy bedspreads are other down points. All rooms have TVs (either flat-screen or of the tube variety), and some have other amenities such as microwaves, mini-fridges, and small balconies. Some rooms have modern, shared bathrooms with walk-in showers, while others have private en-suite facilities.
