Valverde Hotel

Like the neighboring buildings along this exclusive stretch of Avenida da Liberdade, the Valverde Hotel is in a beautiful classical town house of arched windows and sculpted balconies. But once inside, the swanky interiors are darkly moody and modern, with black accent walls and doors, wood-grain paneling, and ambient lighting. Furniture is a mix of contemporary and vintage, such as armchairs in a mod square-print fabric paired with Windsor chairs. The sunlit courtyard garden draws a stylish contrast between its lush vegetation and the streamlined furnishings that include black rectangular planters and wire chairs. The hotel is popular with couples taking city breaks, but it draws guests from across the spectrum, including families, solo travelers, and friends traveling together. 

Valverde Hotel is located on the swanky Avenida da Liberdade, one of the city's main thoroughfares. The avenue is famous for its many luxury boutiques such as Gucci, Dior, and Chanel. A shopping center is next door, and there are many restaurants, cafes, pastry shops, and other businesses in the immediate area. The closest subway station is Avenida, a two-minute walk from the hotel.

The 25 rooms at the Valverde Hotel are chic and elegant, with each painted a different color from a palette of gray, beige, pale blue, and soft pink, which offer a nice contrast to the black accent walls. Carpets have interesting geometric patterns, and nature-themed artwork or architectural prints decorate the walls.

At 215 square feet, Mini Rooms are compact, and some guests find them cramped and dark. Furniture is sparse, consisting of bedside tables and desks in warm natural wood tones. Classic Rooms, between 269 and 323 square feet, are more spacious, and include modern easy chairs and small tables. Suites, between 463 and 592 square feet, have spacious living rooms. Most rooms and suites have balconies overlooking the courtyard or street, while the top-floor Valverde Suite overlooks the city's rooftops and the castle of St. Jorge.

The luxurious black-marble bathrooms are spacious, equipped with large walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads, and separate enclosures for the toilets and bidets. Classic Rooms and Suites have separate bathtubs, walk-in showers, and rectangular vessel sinks. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, safes, and Zenology luxury toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. Suites add Delta espresso machines.

With a restaurant, bar, and library lounge, the Valverde packs in a lot for a boutique property, but it lacks a fitness center and spa. Breakfast, included in the room rate, comes with breads and pastries, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, and a la carte dishes like cooked eggs and pancakes. Gluten-free options are also available. The restaurant and bar, Sitio Valverde, has an adjacent courtyard patio and offers a menu inspired by traditional Portuguese cuisine. It's open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and also serves afternoon tea and Sunday brunch. Room service is available. Live music is on offer here in the evenings, including performances of Portuguese fado twice a week.The library lounge, next to the reception area, has plenty of seating, and books and magazines to peruse. In-room massages, boat rides, laundry, and on-site parking are all available, for additional fees. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
