Bottom Line

The Days Inn City Centre Liverpool is a 154-room budget hotel set in the heart of Liverpool right next to James Street station. Location could hardly be more convenient for exploring the city center and well as providing super-easy access to the docks district. Lobby, rooms, and restaurant are all modern and pretty basic, with bright teal and wood laminate decor, but more than serve their purpose. Buffet breakfast is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free. While noise from the station isn't an issue, the odd boisterous weekender can sometimes be heard between rooms. Overall, it's a solid option for a good value hotel in a convenient central setting.

Days Inn by Wyndham Liverpool City Centre

Scene

Functional no-frills chain hotel set embedded alongside train station

The Days Inn City Centre Liverpool was opened alongside the James Street MerseyRail station in 2011 and shares the same seven-story, glass and metal-fronted modern block. Stepping inside, the small and surprisingly quiet reception area is decked out in the chain's signature turquoise and pale green, while two elevators whisk guests to one of six floors. The atmosphere is functional and efficient, if a little transient, with little in the way of public spaces or unnecessarily frills. It provides a no-nonsense, clean, and convenient place to stay for a steady stream of business guests during the week, and budget-conscious tourists and the odd group of partiers at weekends.

Location

Very central location within minutes' of the dock district and city center shopping

The hotel is located on a city street in the heart of Liverpool, right next to the James Street train station and a few minutes' walk from the dock district. The location is obviously excellent for those arriving by the MerseyRail line, while also convenient for easy access on foot to all of Liverpool's city center attractions. Shoppers find themselves just a block away from the huge Liverpool One retail and leisure center and five minutes' walk from the hallowed Cavern Club. The Liverpool Pier Head Ferry Terminal -- with boats to the Isle of Man -- is about a half-mile away, while John Lennon Airport is 20 to 30 minutes by car.

Rooms

Simple, functional rooms with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi

The hotel has 154 rooms, all of which are decorated in fresh, modern tones of gray and turquoise, simple wood-veneer furnishings, and carpeted floors. Rooms are air-conditioned with free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee stations, and flat-screen TVs, while bathrooms are relatively spacious with stall showers though with wall-mounted soap dispensers. Although many rooms sit over the station, soundproofing keeps outside noise to the minimum (though there have been reports of noise between rooms due to rowdy weekenders).
