Bottom Line

The Hard Days Night Hotel is an upmarket, 110-room tribute to Liverpool's greatest musical export set right in the bustling heart of where John, Paul, George, and Ringo first cut their teeth. With the Cavern Club just around the corner and most of the city's attractions well within walking distance, the location is excellent -- though the busy road can create noise issues in some rooms. The Beatles theme just about manages not to slip into '60s kitsch and rooms are tastefully done with upscale amenities -- some have balconies. Restaurant and bar areas are good, if a little overpriced, and room rates are typical for hotels of this caliber in the city. For fans of the Fab Four, there's no better choice.

Hard Days Night Hotel

Scene

Unique Beatles-themed hotel awash with memorabilia set to a Fab Four soundtrack

Literally one-of-a-kind, the Hard Days Night hotel was opened in 2008 and is still the only Beatles-inspired hotel in the world. Housed in a handsome, 19th-century building with plenty of neoclassical flourish, the first clue as to the hotel's theme is a statue of each member of the '60s band perched on the first floor of its facade. Stepping inside, there's barely a corner that doesn't reference the group, and the hotel is awash with original art, posters, and memorabilia. Beatles music plays on loop, though relatively unobtrusively, throughout. Interior design is more stylish and contemporary than '60s kitsch and should appeal to a broad range of guests -- even non-Beatles fans. Many celebrities stay here when in town to perform, and are pictured on the hotel's wall of fame holding their favorite Fab Four album.

Location

In Liverpool's bustling Cavern quarter around the block from the famous club

The hotel is located right in the bustling heart of Liverpool, just around the corner from Mathew Street and a reconstruction of the Cavern Club where The Beatles first honed their musical skills. The interactive Beatles Story exhibit is about a 15-minute walk away at Albert Dock, where visitors can also hop aboard Magical Mystery bus tours to Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. Moorfields, Liverpool James Street, and Liverpool Central train stations are all five to 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, while the John Lennon Airport is less than half an hour by car.

Rooms

Tasteful contemporary decor with Beatles portraits and bath products

The hotel has 110 individually decorated rooms which blend tasteful contemporary interior design with colorful soft furnishings; a portrait of a Beatle is above each bed. Speedy Wi-Fi and bottled mineral water both come free of charge and flat-screen TVs have cable and pay movies. Bathrooms are clean and modern with shower/tub combos, but otherwise pretty standard besides their Beatles-branded bath products. Some rooms open to balconies, but these incur an extra charge. Rooms can be on the small side, while lower-level, street-facing ones can suffer from traffic noise. All rooms have safes and tea- and coffee-making facilities. The hotel also has a McCartney Suite paying tribute to Sir Paul, and a Lennon Suite with a baby grand piano.

Features

Excellent range of eating and drinking opportunities -- but no health facilities

The hotel has a range of bars and restaurants, all of which are particularly well finished and popular with both guests and non-guests -- a live lounge also hosts regular performances from local musicians. Blakes serves upscale comfort dishes, while Bar Four serves craft cocktails in a wood-paneled setting with original paintings by a former art school classmate of John Lennon's. The Lounge and Bar is a nice spot for meetings, with Wi-Fi and a full afternoon tea service. The concierge, who extremely knowledgeable about the band and the history of Liverpool, is on hand to book tours and tickets. Unusually for a hotel of this caliber, however, there's no pool or fitness facility -- it's all about the band.
