Bottom Line

The Clontarf Hotel is mid-range, bed-and-breakfast located on the quieter West Shore of Llandudno. The nine rooms, which include free Wi-Fi, are individually styled, and some have such high-end amenities as jetted tubs and steam cabins; most have sea views. An excellent breakfast of locally sourced items is included in the room rate, as is parking. Hospitality, while friendly, is more hands-off than at other bed-and-breakfasts, so for independent-minded travelers who still seek the coziness of a bed-and-breakfast and prefer to be away from the town's hubbub, The Clontarf is an excellent choice.

The Clontarf Hotel

Scene

Homey and inviting bed-and-breakfast with discreet hospitality

The Clontarf Hotel is housed in a large, handsome red-brick building with such Tudor-style touches as lead-lined windows and a semi-timbered facade. Inside, the vibe is unpretentious and inviting, with beige-and-red tones, fireplace, board games, books, and leather couches and armchairs in the lounge, and hands-off hospitality that might appeal to more independent-minded travelers who prefer to be left alone. A well-tended front garden has seating and tables -- though sand from the nearby beach gets swept in from time to time.

Location

Set at the foot of the Great Orme next to Llandudno's quieter West Shore Beach

The hotel is located on the more peaceful side of the popular Welsh resort of Llandudno, at the foot of its Great Orme headland. West Shore Beach is about a five-minute walk away, and offers a quieter and less touristy spot outside the hubbub of the north side of town. While there's little in the immediate vicinity, the resort's bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops are within a 10- to 15-minute walk  away. The hotel is also convenient to the Great Orme and its cable car and ancient copper mines (under a 10-minute drive, or guests can walk 10 minutes to the tramway that conveys visitors to the top of the headland). Other attractions in the vicinity include Conwy Castle (about a 15-minute drive) and the majestic Snowdonia National Park with myriad trails, which is about a half hour's drive away.

Rooms

Individually styled rooms with signature amenities and some sea views

The hotel's nine have homey decor; though each is individually styled, guests may find details such as wallpaper accent walls, chandeliers, decorative mirrors, and framed wall art. All include flat-screen TVs, tea/coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Higher-end rooms include extras such as steam cabins (the Metropolitan Room) and body-jet showers (the ground-floor Premier Royale Room). The Romantic Room also includes a four-poster bed and jetted spa tub for two. There is no air-conditioning, which is typical for the area and rarely an issue in this temperate climate. Bathrooms, which have attractive tan tile, are clean and modern, with high-end L'Occitane toiletries in wall-mounted dispensers. While most rooms have views of the sea or the Great Orme, top-floor rooms are small with tiny en-suite bathrooms.
