The Winchmore Hotel

Housed in a Victorian building typical of most of the hotels in the area, the Winchmore Hotel is a value option that stands out for its accessible facilities, which draw many wheelchair-using guests. The decor is straightforward seaside hotel fare, with homey styling replete with dowdy floral patterning, textured wallpaper, and slightly hodgepodge furnishings. The family-owned property, however, is clean and well-run with a pleasant and unostentatious ambience that should appeal to vacationers looking for a no-nonsense traditional accommodation. Unlike many of the period lodgings in the area, it has elevator service to all floors, and a few ground-floor rooms at the back of the property, which should suit guests with limited mobility. The bar area is small and cozy, with funky red chairs adding a modern touch, and the bartender is known for his mind-bending magic card tricks. Just note that the nearby Lauriston and Lawton Court Hotels are more polished and often not much pricier, so it may be worth comparing rates.

The hotel is located right in the middle of the main beachfront avenue of Mostyn Crescent in the popular seaside resort of Llandudno. The area comprises a long stretch of well-maintained hotels and Victorian architecture that overlook the long pebble beach and bay. Numerous restaurants, cafes, and pubs are within a five-minute walk of the hotel, as is the Llandudno train station. There's also plenty to explore by car, with the Great Orme and its cable car and ancient copper mines a seven-minute drive away, and the majestic Snowdonia National Park, with magnificent trails, about a half hour's drive.

All 32 rooms are decorated in a fresh, modern style with light-wood and wicker furniture, matching floral wallpaper and fabrics, and carpeting. Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, tea/coffeemakers, wall-mounted hairdryers, and free Wi-Fi, although the signal can be weak at times (especially when many guests try to use the network at once). Clean, modern, and well-maintained bathrooms have either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. Front-facing rooms overlook the road and sea beyond, while those at the back lack views. Several rooms have been adapted for accessibility, including one with an en-suite room for a caregiver. A few guests have complained about thin curtains that let in too much morning light, making it difficult to sleep in. 

The room rate includes breakfast, which offers a cold buffet and cooked-to-order items like eggs and sausages. The hotel also offers a three-course meal in the evening at a reasonable price (though note that it must be requested before 3 p.m. each day). Free parking is available at the back of the building (it's rare in the area for a hotel to have its own lot; St. George's Hotel is one of the only other seafront options that offers this), and mobility scooters are available to rent. The hotel's bar, which has plenty of seating and a wall-mounted TV, serves reasonably priced drinks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, but the signal can be spotty. The hotel allows dogs.
