Bottom Line

Offering striking modern decor in the heart of London’s Southwark area, CitizenM is a four-star boutique hotel that delivers an original hotel experience at a very competitive price. Built as a hub for creative types and young professionals, this pod hotel is ideal for short stints in the city and for people who’d like to escape the hustle and bustle of touristic Central London.

CitizenM London Bankside

Scene

Unique modern style with careful attention to detail

Upon entering the building one might think they were in a chic restaurant or cocktail bar instead of a hotel lobby. The custom-designed open space is decorated with a bright palette of colors, Vitra furniture, and a wide assortment of books, paintings, and one-off decorations which give the place a genuine feeling of sophistication. Likewise the rooms are similarly stylish and well laid-out. CitizenM hotel was planned with design as a focal point and this most certainly shows.

Location

Right in the thick of South London’s chic and artistic Bankside district

CitizenM is located in the revived and trendy area of Southwark, close to London Bridge, Southbank, Borough Market, Waterloo, and the Tate Modern art gallery. The modern architecture in this area is some of the best in the city, and the quality of bars and restaurants near the hotel is an added bonus. Easily accessible by public transportation from both Heathrow and Gatwick airport, it is walking distance from some of the major sights of the city -- but without the feeling of being in an overly touristic area.

Rooms

Small yet sophisticated, with plenty of extras

All 192 rooms are of the same size and design, and despite the lack of space the rooms are built with comfort and utility in mind. Personal tablets in every room allow guests to control the rooms' color scheme as well as temperature. Free on-demand TV shows and movies can be accessed via the flat screen, wall-mounted TV. Rooms definitely are small but they’re practical, each offering a large king-size bed as well as rain shower for guests. Soaps and shampoos (no conditioners, unfortunately) are environmentally friendly. Windows are soundproofed to avoid street noise. Due to the limited size of the rooms this is not a family-friendly hotel, as there is no extra space for cots and cribs.

Features

Well-equipped for the tech savvy, creative types

CitizenM does not disappoint with their extras, offering a multitude of features for their creative clientele. The main floor and lounge is meticulously designed to be a social forum as well as a creative hideaway. Countless fashion and design books, as well as privately commissioned paintings, can be found in every corner of the main floor for inspiration. Free high-speed Wi-Fi for all guests, as well as complimentary iMac computers, are a definite perk too. Private conference rooms, which include all necessary media and refreshments are a wonderful environment for local businesspeople and foreign clients. Automated self-check-in machines take the formality out of the arrival process and cut out the wait for the time-conscious. The 24-hour “CantineM” bar and self-serve café is helpful, especially for the night owls.
