Glenlyn Hotel

Set within Victorian terraced houses, the Glenlyn Guest House epitomizes British middle-class suburbia with decorative lace curtains, striped wallpaper, and plaid furnishings. Depending on your point of view, the atmosphere is quaint and charming, or a bit old-fashioned. Some areas, however, have been updated and offer a modern counterpoint to the mostly traditional, B&B vibe. This family-run hotel also extends to a spacious, well-tended garden with manicured lawns and a covered patio with seating for sunny spells. Situated on a residential street lined with Victorian and brick homes in Finchley, North London, this hotel is very much in the suburbs of the capital. Although the hotel is only a ten-minute walk from the nearest Northern Line Underground station, getting into the city center from there requires another 25-minute train journey. The hotel is well-situated, however, for getting to attractions such as Alexandra Palace, a 15-minute drive away, or Brent Cross shopping mall, about the same distance. It may also be a convenient location for those driving into the capital, but wanting to avoid having to park in central London.

Rooms are fresh and refined, with minimal decoration, fresh off-white paint, wooden floors and furniture, and period touches -- some have individual accents, like plaid pillows or deep blue headboards. All 27 rooms include 32-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, and ensuite bathrooms with quality toiletries. There are also three one-bedroom apartments, with separate kitchens and lounges, located near the main building with their own private entrance and door entry systems.

The Glenlyn Guest House serves a full English or continental breakfast (included in the price) each morning in the bright and airy conservatory overlooking the garden. Expansive skylights let in loads of natural light, illuminating dark wood and leather furnishings -- an elegant yet cheerful scene for breakfast.
