Bottom Line

The 26-room Hotel 55 is a modern boutique hotel with artistic decor. Located in a townhouse in Ealing -- a residential suburb of West London -- the hotel isn't ideal for visiting the sights. However, it's a pleasant mid-range place to stay, with beautiful paintings and modern sculpture in the common areas and a quiet garden out back. Rooms vary in size, but most are in good condition save for some nicks and scrapes. The Japanese restaurant on the ground floor is popular, but the continental breakfast is less than impressive and isn't included in room rates.

Hotel 55

Scene

Boutique hotel with beautiful artwork, modern design

Although the white Hotel 55 looks bland from the outside, the interiors are contrastingly modern and funky, with beautiful Pollack-style paintings and metal sculptures. The lobby area, made up of several rooms, is cramped and boxy, but the decorations really make the space stand out. Dark walls allow the artwork to pop, while beige leather doors and couches reflect light and make the space feel warm and welcoming. That said, there are a few old-fashioned details, such as wood banisters and stained glass windows, which -- while beautiful -- are of a completely different style. The hotel draws a mix of business and leisure travelers with work or family in the Ealing area.

Location

In the quiet, residential suburb of Ealing, in West London

Hotel 55 is located in Ealing, a suburb of West London. Most of the London sights take about 30 minutes by train to reach, though thankfully the North Ealing underground station is just up the road. Ealing itself is quiet and predominantly residential, though there are a few pubs and shops worth exploring. For those coming by car, the hotel has limited parking on a first-come, first-serve basis, and there is additional parking by the tube station for a fee.

Rooms

Thoughtfully designed rooms in a range of sizes

Like many boutique hotels, rooms at the Hotel 55 range in size and amenities, but all are stylish and artistic. Rooms have natural wood headboards and furnishings as well as beautiful butterfly sculptures above the beds. However, rooms can feel cramped, and some of the Double Rooms have have vaulted ceilings that make them feel small. For more space, consider Deluxe King Rooms, large cabin-like spaces off the garden that have full wet bars. Some guests have complained about faulty lighting and basic wear and tear, though nothing is too rundown. Bathrooms are small and sterile, but include L'Occitane bath products.
