Good, central location next to King’s Cross and St. Pancras stations
Fast, free Wi-Fi
Housed in a Victorian-era building with some pretty architectural details
Full English breakfast is a hit with many guests
Clean linens and comfortable beds
Good value
Communal toilets are basic and small
Some rooms are tiny
Situated just three minutes’ walk from one of London’s busiest transport hubs, this 20-room value option offers basic but clean accommodation in a central location. The full English breakfast is popular with many guests and free when booking through the hotel website. However, the property does not offer much else in the way of perks.
Scene
Some pretty, Victorian-era architectural details, but a somewhat dated and confusing layout
As with most three-pearl budget hotels, there is not much of a unifying stylistic theme at the Jesmond Dene Hotel -- and while the period listed building means you get to experience some wonderful Victorian-era architecture firsthand, it also makes for narrow stairways (no elevators) and confusing layouts. In order to reach reception, you must first pass an entrance hallway (but no reception desk or staff) and two sets of stairs. The reception itself is a small but welcoming room, although decked in fairly standard wood paneling. This is all by-the-by however, as every other hotel on the block (and there are literally dozens) is pretty much finished to the same standard. What draws guests to the Jesmond Dene is the excellent full English breakfast -- free when booking via the hotel’s website -- as well as the close proximity to King’s Cross station.
Location
On a fairly quiet side street that is close to King’s Cross station
This hotel is located on a block with literally dozens of similarly sized mid-range hotels -- expect a fairly quiet area surrounded by historical Victorian facades, residential flats, and small, family-run hotels. King’s Cross station is a three-minute walk away -- very convenient for whisking yourself away to any London destination. The area surrounding the station also offers some places to get quick bites to eat.
Rooms
Basic and clean, with fresh linens but dated decor in most rooms
Rooms are basic but clean and generally pleasant, with a hodgepodge of decor in most. Some bathrooms have modern glass sinks, while others have standard ceramic sinks; some rooms are furnished in dark wood while others in light wood; some rooms have a shiny silk-effect wallpaper while others have walls painted yellow. Overall they’re clean and fairly comfortable, though some are tiny. Before booking, potential guests should take note that not all rooms come with bathrooms -- and the communal toilets are basic and on the small side.
Features
Full cooked English breakfast in a cheerful, pleasant breakfast room
Booking directly on the hotel website gets you a free full English breakfast -- bacon, eggs, sausage, baked beans, and toast. The breakfast room is cheery with a sweet, cream-colored pantry and wooden furniture. The fast, free Wi-Fi i another solid perk, but the hotel does not offer much else in the way of amenities. Parking is available for a fee.
