Montagu Place
Hotel is an unassuming, upscale property set in a typical Georgian terrace
townhouse in a quiet and upmarket central London neighborhood. The decor
is tastefully understated and the property is immaculate, with high-quality in-room amenities including flat-screen TVs and herbal teas. While breakfast is better than at most hotels, it's not generally included
in the rate. Past guests have also reported that noisy plumbing can be an issue. Overall, however,
this is a fine example of boutique lodging in a great location. It's also worth considering the upscale The Marylebone Hotel, which gives guests access to a nearby wellness center.
Scene
Chic and intimate boutique hotel set in typical Georgian townhouse
Set at the end of
a charming row of yellow-brick Georgian townhouses, the Montagu Place Hotel
only makes its presence known with a small, silver plaque. Stepping inside,
this sense of restrained elegance continues in the lobby, which has fresh and
tasteful interiors finished in cool blues and beige. The vibe is contemporary
yet classical, with original features such as ornate coving, a fireplace
illuminated by ceiling spotlights, and modern-design drum lamps. Art prints
and antique statuary add to a sense of urbane chic. The reception desk doubles
as a bar for guests to take a tipple while checking in. A 2015 renovation of the
property means the place is well presented throughout, while clientele tend to
be a mix of business guests and vacationing couples. As this is a protected historic building,
however, there's no elevator (and four floors) so this hotel is not recommended for those with restricted mobility.
Location
Quiet central London neighborhood between Baker Street and Marble Arch
The hotel is
located on a quiet road in a largely residential, upmarket
neighborhood on the edge of Marylebone in central London. While plenty of the
capital's tourist attractions are within walking distance -- Regent's Park and
Marble Arch are both 10 minutes away on foot -- it's also just five minutes from
Baker Street Station that connects to Oxford Street and the West End in about
the same time. It's also a five-minute cab journey to Paddington Station, which has connections to Heathrow Airport in 15 to 20 minutes on the express service.
Rooms
Stylish and modern rooms with quality in-room refreshments
The hotel's 16
rooms break down into three categories: Comfy, Fancy, and Swanky. All rooms
benefitted from a 2015 renovation, and are well-presented with stylish,
understated decor and elegant contemporary furnishings. Standard amenities
include flat-screen TVs and high-quality refreshment facilities
that include freshly ground coffee and herbal teas. Higher-end rooms also have
mini-fridges, bathrobes, and free mineral water, and face the street as opposed to the less-attractive back of the property, which looks out on other buildings. Bathrooms are clean and
unfussy with either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos and Molton Brown toiletries. Note that there have been reports of rooms being prone to noisy
plumbing.
Features
Decent -- albeit expensive -- breakfast service and impressive wine selection
The hotel serves
and extensive continental breakfast together with cooked-to-order eggs in its
contemporary dining lounge, but the meal is not included in the rate and is pricy. While there's no restaurant on-site, the hotel has teamed with a
local Thai eatery that can provide hot food either in rooms or in the hotel lounge. An
after-hours snack menu is also available and the bar has an impressive wine
selection. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
