Portobello Hotel

This boutique hotel is quintessentially British and typical of the area. Only barely-there gold lettering and beautiful flower pots outside distinguish it from the row of white neo-classical mansions. Inside, the sense of calm reflects the unassuming exterior. Historic pieces of art, along with antique vases, desks, and wardrobes, decorate the communal areas and bedrooms. As of our 2017 visit, the hotel had recently undergone renovations, so most rooms and common areas look particularly sharp. Guests tend to keep to their rooms or explore the surrounding Notting Hill area. As a result, the sitting room and lobby were unoccupied when we passed through, adding to the serene and private atmosphere. The Portobello appeals mostly to affluent sightseers keen on exploiting the nearby shopping and sightseeing opportunities, though celebrities and wedding guests aren’t uncommon. The staff-to-guest ratio is low and check-in is a relaxed affair, which sits perfectly with the hotel’s unflappable vibe. This is a charming property, and most guests are --unsurprisingly -- couples.

This hotel’s location is ideal for those who want to feel like they’ve discovered a little oasis in Notting Hill. It's close enough to the action -- just a 10-minute walk in either direction to Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate Tube stations -- yet feels completely apart from the crowds and noise of the area. It’s also a short 10-minute walk to The Ledbury, a two Michelin star restaurant. Westbourne Grove has plenty of trendy restaurants, and Notting Hill is packed with pubs and cocktail bars. All are within five to 10 minutes of the hotel on foot. Famous Portobello Road Market is a five-minute walk away and is also the site of the annual Notting Hill Carnival. Other popular sights, like Kensington Palace, are just over 15 minutes away by train. Heathrow is the closest airport. Expect a 50-minute drive, though that time will vary depending on traffic. It takes just about the same amount time or less to get there by train. 

From jewel-toned walls and murals to opulent deep tubs and tapestries, the 21 rooms draw inspiration from Morocco, Japan, and even under the sea. The Japanese-themed room is particularly impressive, with lots of soft drapes hanging above the circular bed and a gold bathtub which, rumor has it, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss filled with champagne during their stay. In the Moroccan room, the Moorish influences can be seen in the emerald green walls, gilded coffee table, and dark wood furnishings. Though the theme varies from room to room, all are quirky and display an impressive attention to detail. In the ‘Single,’ ‘Good,’ and ‘Better’ rooms, however, the bathrooms can be fairly compact and the desk space is limited. Other features are fairly standard, including air-conditioning, safes, HDTVs, coffeemakers, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Check ahead to see if your room has a garden or street view -- the street is pleasant, but the garden is spectacular. Evenings are quiet, as there's little traffic or outside noise penetrating even the rooms facing the road. Keep in mind that some rooms have yet to be overhauled as of 2017, so it may be worth inquiring before arrival.

Unsurprisingly, this compact boutique hotel has limited features, so it may not appeal to travelers looking for a social atmosphere. Although top London eateries and nightlife venues are a short walk away, the limited light snacks menu and continental breakfast services may underwhelm some guests. Hot options are available for an extra fee. Similarly, the relaxed honor bar is perfectly in keeping with the hotel's unpretentious and personal approach, but the lack of a restaurant or designated bar does make this boutique a quiet and sedate place to stay. The hotel offers an exclusive shopping package for its guests, which makes full use of the nearby local markets, designer boutiques, and artisan stalls. The package includes a glass of fizz on arrival, exclusive shopping discounts, an overnight stay, and a cooked breakfast. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. While the hotel overlooks the beautiful Stanley Gardens, guests are not granted access to them.
