The Space Apart Hotel is an upper-mid-range property occupying an attractive Georgian townhouse near Kensington Gardens. The 30 studio-style apartments sleep up to four and all come with full kitchens, brushed-glass bathrooms, and modern decor that includes wood floors and chic wallpaper. With its quiet yet convenient location, the hotel is a good choice for business or leisure travelers in need of an extended-stay hotel. However, the property lacks some of the amenities common to more traditional hotels -- there's no fitness center or on-site bar/restaurant. Travelers may want to compare rates at Go Native Earl's Court, an apartment hotel with easy access to the A4 road that leads to Heathrow.
Scene
Friendly atmosphere and fresh, modern style in an historic Georgian building
Space Apart Hotel is tucked away from the main road and feels immediately intimate and quiet. It's housed in a clean, white Georgian building, and maintains period details such as columns, wrought-iron balconies, and arched windows. Inside, the mood is modern and a touch edgy, with zebra-print carpeting on the stairway, funky, futuristic overhead lamps, and a slick, oversized mirror on the wall. A bucket of wood-handled umbrellas set beside a dark-brown accent wall and an elegant wood bench also lend sophisticated style to the lobby area. Drawing mainly longer-term tourists and some business travelers wanting in-room kitchen facilities, the property focuses on keeping up the beautifully outfitted apartments; there are no real common areas, except for a communal balcony with a few lounge chairs on the fourth floor.
Location
On a quiet residential street
The hotel is on a quiet, residential street lined with Georgian facades, hotels, and apartment buildings. There are plenty of places to eat in the area, including numerous casual ethnic restaurants. Guests are far enough outside of the center of the West End to feel removed from the hectic pace, but can easily get right into the heart of London. Both the Bayswater and Queensway tube stations are within a five- to 10-minute walk. Kensington Gardens are a 20-minute walk away while Regent's Park is 20 minutes by bus from the Royal Oak stop. Buckingham Palace and Big Ben can each be reached in about 25 minutes by bus from Orne Square. Heathrow is a half-hour drive, or just over 30 minutes by public transport.
Rooms
Stylish apartments have modern kitchens and reclining beds.
The Space Apart Hotel offers a range of apartments that include studio-style Standard and Premium Rooms and Triple units with space for up to four people. Standard Rooms are nicely decorated in muted earth tones, including textured gray bedspreads and subtly patterned wallpaper. Wood floors, black laminate furnishings, and glossy white kitchen cabinets complete the modern look, though furnishings look a bit worn in some units. Each apartment has a reclining bed, full kitchen with a two-burner hob and stainless steel appliances, flat-screen TV with DVD player, iPod dock, safe, and dining table for two. Bathrooms have frosted glass walls, heated towel racks, and walk-in rainfall showers, as well as unlimited free toiletries. Most units have washers and dryers and there are limited laundry facilities on-site, as well. Premium units are a bit larger than the Standards, while Triples are the largest available and have extra-luxe furnishings, including lofted sleeping areas in some. All units are equipped with security entrance phones, so guests can buzz in their guests directly.
Features
Communal balcony with lounge chairs and free Wi-Fi -- little else
As an apartment-style property, the Space Apart Hotel lacks extra amenities and there's no fitness center or on-site dining. There is, however, a communal balcony with lounge chairs on the fourth floor. There's also a DVD library in the lobby where guests can borrow movies, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Business services, such as printing and faxing, are available at the front desk.
