The Mad Hatter Hotel

Originally a gentleman’s hat factory, the Mad Hatter Hotel pays tribute to its heritage with a subtle Alice in Wonderland and Mad Hatter theme sprinkled throughout its traditionally decorated interiors. The 19th-century building features lovely windowsill flower boxes and an elegant entrance that leads guests to a small reception area. Vases of fresh flowers enliven the space, which consists of a large wooden front desk, dark wood paneling, and a pair of green tufted leather chairs. Hallways are lined with whimsical prints and various illustrations, though the Mad Hatter references are barely palpable, until guests make their way to the hotel’s pub, where a collection of hats are displayed in glass cubes above cozy booth seating. The atmospheric space is ensconced in wood -- there’s a beautiful antique-style bar at its center, an array of wooden tables and booths, and dark wood paneling throughout the cozy and classic space. Checkered floor tiling pairs well with all the wood, and large windows overlooking the street bring light in to the dim space. There are also cozy corners full of worn leather couches, and there are board games on hand for those who want to settle in for a round. The pub is a popular establishment with a lively, friendly atmosphere that pulls in locals and guests alike.

The centrally located hotel is conveniently situated within walking distance of many popular sights, and is well serviced by public transportation. There’s a bus stop serving several lines around the corner from the hotel, and the Southwark tube station is a five-minute walk away. London Waterloo East station is also close (a seven-minute walk). The hotel is situated at the intersection of two fairly busy streets and surrounded mostly by office buildings, though there are several restaurants and pubs a short walk away. Some of London’s top attractions are within walking distance, including the Tate Modern (a six-minute walk), Shakespeare’s Globe (nine-minute walk), the London Eye (15-minute walk), and Borough Market (a 13-minute walk). And, the Thames River is just two blocks away.

Rooms at the hotel are elegantly decorated in a contemporary style, with subtle nods to the Mad Hatter theme courtesy of whimsical Alice in Wonderland prints adorning the walls, and accent pillows with teapot designs. Twin and Double Rooms are decorated in a neutral color palette of grays accented by rich teal bedspreads and pillows, and have large black tufted headboards. Wooden furnishings include work desks and small sitting areas with armchairs and tables. Superior Rooms up the design ante with chic, shimmering wallpaper accent walls and brocade armchairs. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with Sky channels, tea- and coffee-making facilities, retro-style rotary phones, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are small but clean and pleasant, with shower/tub combos and a range of toiletries.

The Mad Hatter pub, a popular spot with locals and guests alike, is a classic, cozy space that serves traditional British pub classics, along with a great selection of beers, ales, and whiskies. There are board games on hand, and the pub also screens sports matches. The pub serves breakfast (not included in the room rate), as well as a weekly Sunday roast. Room service is also available. Besides the on-site pub, the hotel has free Wi-Fi throughout the property, laundry service, and a 24-hour reception desk.
