Bottom Line

The Tower is a modern, upper-middle-range business property located on the Thames, right next to Tower Bridge. Its 801 rooms are starting to look a bit dated for a hotel of this caliber, and there have been complaints about cleanliness and maintenance issues. Though it's a bit unpolished in places, the hotel does have a restaurant, a bar, and 19 fully equipped meeting rooms. There's also a lovely terrace with great views. While the location is great for business travelers wanting access to the City of London, tourists may be better off staying somewhere closer to West End attractions. The Grosvenor Hotel is a good alternative and it's located near Buckingham Palace.

The Tower Hotel

Scene

Contemporary hotel with stunning views of Tower Bridge

The Tower is a stocky, stone-and-glass building with views of the Thames and Tower Bridge from the outdoor terrace and some rooms. Currently managed by the Guoman Group, this four-pearl hotel has a chain-like vibe and is geared toward business travelers. The lobby is large and bright thanks to tall floor-to-ceiling windows. Brown carpets, glossy cream columns and floors, and brown furniture create an overall warm vibe. Hallways have red or brown, blue, and green carpeting and antique pictures or framed photo collages. The restaurant and bar have a clean, minimalist style, with wooden floors, a brown-and-cream color scheme, and comfortable and contemporary chairs, plus lovely views of the river and bridge. All in all, public spaces are tasteful, if not particularly memorable. Business travelers make up a significant portion of the clientele.

Location

Close to the Tower of London and Leadenhall Market

Located on the north bank of the River Thames, The Tower has stunning views of Tower Bridge, but it’s not within walking distance of most of London’s attractions. It’s a seven-minute walk to the Tower of London and a two-minute walk to the bridge. Leadenhall Market is a 15-minute walk away. The hotel is surrounded by a good number of dining options. Some attractions like Shakespeare’s Globe and St. Paul’s Cathedral take nearly half an hour to reach on foot, which might make public transportation a more viable option for some. There’s a bus stop that’s four minutes away, while the closest tube station is a seven-minute walk from the property. Most attractions in London can be reached in 35 minutes or so by the tube. London City Airport is an 18-minute drive away, while Heathrow takes an hour to reach by car, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Rooms with some dated details and wear; views of Tower Bridge in some

The Tower offers Standard Rooms, Executive, Suites, and Family Rooms, all with comfortable, but slightly dated decor, with light-wood furniture, dark leather headboards, and velvety blue throw pillows and bed runners. Some offer views of the Thames, the marina, or Tower Bridge. All rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, kettles, free bottled water, air-conditioning, and safes. Family Rooms have sofa beds, while Executive Rooms and Suites come with free minibars, Nespresso machines, and free access to the Club Lounge. Suites also have separate living rooms and kitchens. The white-tiled bathrooms have either black or brown granite sinks, shower/tub combos, and basic toiletries. Hairdryers are provided but they’re at least a decade old. Be aware there have been reports of cleanliness issues, visible stains, wear and tear, and maintenance issues in the rooms.
