Bottom Line

The 116-room Kawada Hotel is a value
property in downtown Los Angeles within walking distance of attractions, restaurants and bars, and the metro. Rooms are small and simple with kitchenettes; but the design is dated, the bathrooms
lack counter space, and the nightclub next door creates noise for some rooms. There's an on-site
cafe with breakfast and lunch, and the Ebanos Crossing nightclub offers live entertainment, along with cocktails and small
plates. Concierge services, laundry facilities, and a business center are
available, but Wi-Fi and parking cost extra. For guests who don't mind the dated decor, this is a good deal, but those seeking something more modern, with easy access to downtown, could try the Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel.

Scene

An unstylish hotel with a laid back vibe and a red-lit nightclub

The Kawada Hotel occupies a nondescript brick and cement building, which is somewhat charmingly fronted with fire escapes decorated with colorful flowers. Inside, the hotel looks like a 1980s throwback, with its tired-looking potted plants, brass touches, and ho-hum beige carpeting. There are some forgettable glass and wooden furnishings, tubby leather armchairs, and inoffensive watercolor paintings decorating the lobby, where mirrors and the glossy, tiled floors further the '80s vibe. Still, the atmosphere is quiet and laid back, and the recessed lighting is pleasant. Elsewhere, the decor is somewhat more interesting. The Cherry Pick
Cafe, for example, feels like a cozy hospital cafeteria, with black-and-white tile floors and a green vinyl couch. The Ebanos
Crossing nightclub, meanwhile, is moody and atmospheric, with red lighting and red leather banquettes, exposed brick and industrial-style tubing, and oversize antique-style chandeliers. Guests tend to be younger travelers on a budget, who don't mind the club noise and the decidedly unglamorous vibe of the property.

Location

In downtown LA where much is within walking distance

In the heart of downtown LA is the Kawada
Hotel, with restaurants, the metro, bars, and shops within walking distance.
The Walt Disney Concert Hall, Museum of Contemporary Art, and Grand Central
Market are within five minutes' walk. Guests can access sports and live entertainment within a 10- to 15-minute drive at Dodger Stadium, the Staples Center, and Hollywood Bowl. The Los Angeles International Airport is about 20 to 30 minutes away.

Rooms

Plain and basic with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers

Rooms are small and basic, with multicolor polyester bedspreads, and pale wood laminate furniture that blends in with the cream-colored walls and beige carpeting. Each room has a desk and flat-screen TV, and a dated kitchenette with two-burner stovetop, mini-fridge, metal sink, and coffeemaker. The windows are rather small but let in a good amount of light. Overall, though, the dated design is
unappealing and unstylish. Additionally, guests complain about loud noise from
the nightclub next door. Bathrooms are plain, with brown tile and cream paint, along with shower/tub combos. Serene Elements toiletries are in all bathrooms. Some
bathrooms only have showers, however, and there is limited counter space.

Features

Great location, and on-site restaurant and nightclub; fees for Wi-Fi and parking

The hotel's best feature is its convenient downtown location. Otherwise, there are some nice conveniences, but nothing too memorable. The Cherry Pick Cafe is a plus for most
guests, as it serves the breakfast included in some packages. Sandwiches, muffins, bacon, cakes, and coffee are offered and receive
decent reviews. Additionally, the on-site nightclub, Ebanos Crossing, has
monthly events such as comedy shows and live bands, as well as cocktails and
small plates. Concierge services and coin-operated laundry facilities are
on-site, and the lobby houses the business center with copier machine. Wi-Fi and
parking both require daily fees.
