Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Sunrise Hotel San Pedro is an affordable budget option for travelers, offering a harbor-facing location and proximity to World Cruise Center. The property is under renovation, with plans to overhaul guest rooms and give public spaces a refresh, though much of it was still dated as of our late summer 2017 visit. Facilities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, and the hotel also offers a free continental breakfast, but there are no hot items. Its 110 guest rooms are spacious and well-equipped with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, and Mini-Suites with living areas are available. The Best Western Plus San Pedro Hotel & Suites has modern rooms, but it isn't close to the harbor and rates can be higher.

Sunrise Hotel San Pedro

Scene

Dated budget hotel across from harbor, draws many cruise passengers

The Sunrise Hotel is one of the few harbor-facing hotels in San Pedro, housed in three-story building with a porte cochere entrance and situated on landscaped grounds. The standout public space is the high-ceilinged lobby, with stained-glass windows, ample natural light, and light-wood floors and paneling. With its free shuttle to the nearby World Cruise Center, the hotel attracts couples and families, many of whom are cruise passengers.

Location

Across street from Downtown Harbor, a five-minute drive from World Cruise Center

The Sunrise Hotel is in San Pedro, across the street from the LA Waterfront, Downtown Harbor, and Los Angeles Maritime Museum. The surrounding area is a bit industrial, but many attractions are close at hand, and the Harbor Blvd. and 6th Street bus stop is a two-minute walk. It's five minutes on foot to the Battleship USS Iowa Museum, and Ports O’ Call Village, with shops and waterfront dining, is a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk or bus ride. World Cruise Center, ferries to Catalina, and Red Car Cruise Center Station trolley is roughly the same distance from the hotel. Long Beach Convention Center and the Aquarium of the Pacific is a little more than 10 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus, and the Queen Mary is a 15-minute drive. It's roughly 10 minutes by car or 25 minutes by bus to Cabrillo Beach and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Long Beach Airport is a 20- to 30-minute drive, and Los Angeles International Airport is 30 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic conditions.

Rooms

Spacious and well-equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi

Guest rooms at the Sunrise Hotel are spacious and have a somewhat handsome look, with wood furniture, art on the walls, and colorful decorative throws on the beds. The color palette is beige, tan, copper, and brown, complemented by colors of baby blue, green, harvest gold, and mauve in the carpeting, upholstery, and decorative throws. Some rooms come with harbor views. The Sunrise is an older property, and many of the rooms were still awaiting updating during our 2017 visit. The amenities package is a plus, with air-conditioning, 42-inch flat-screen TVs with more than 50 cable channels, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have wet bars and Mini-Suites add living areas. The rooms lack safes but safety deposit boxes are available at the front desk. Bathrooms are spacious and come with hairdryers, toiletries, and shower/tub combos, and some have separate vanities. Both smoking and non-smoking rooms are available at the hotel.

Features

Outdoor pool and hot tub, limited continental breakfast, free cruise terminal shuttle

The Sunrise Hotel offers a fairly limited array of property amenities. The outdoor freeform pool is about 15 meters at its longest point, and is situated next to a large deck with a hot tub. It's unheated, but the temperate local weather keeps the water warm enough to swim year-round. A limited free continental breakfast with cereal, baked goods, fresh fruit, and hard-boiled eggs is offered, but there are no hot items. The hotel has no lunch and dinner restaurant, but several restaurants are within walking distance. There's also no public computer or laundry room, but a meeting room and 24-hour front desk with safety deposit boxes is on-site. Free on-site parking is available, with extended parking packages (fee) for cruises guests. There's free Wi-Fi throughout, and a free round-trip shuttle to the cruise terminal with a day’s advance notice required.
