Bottom Line

Built in the early 1900s, the Venice Beach Suites & Hotel is a piece of Venice Beach history that retains much of its original architectural charm. It's perfect for low-maintenance tourists looking to explore the area's unique attractions, while being right in the thick of the action. Rooms have plenty of charm for a value hotel; think: exposed brick walls, wrought-iron headboards, and light wooden floors. The lack of standard hotel services such as daily room cleaning may make it feel a bit too no-frills for some, but the prices are hard to beat for the location.

Oyster Hotel Review

Venice Beach Suites & Hotel

Scene

Historic boutique hotel meets youth hostel on the boardwalk

This family-owned and operated boutique is brimming with local color, and though it's busy with people coming in and out all day long, it has a decidedly laid-back vibe. The lobby is small and cluttered with memorabilia and help-yourself conveniences such as beach balls and surf boards. There's a also a Keurig coffee machine, vending machine, and a single computer on a small wooden desk for guest use.

Location

Right on the Venice Beach Boardwalk

Though rates are reasonable, guests are still paying premium for the location. The hotel is on Ocean Front Walk, right on the Venice Beach boardwalk, in the heart of Venice Beach. It's surrounded by hundreds of restaurants, bars, tattoo shops, art galleries, and street vendors, to say nothing of the colorful characters who populate the area. It's a 90-minute drive (in traffic) to Universal Studios and 20-minute drive to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Rooms

Clean rooms with exposed brick and kitchenettes

Despite the lack of daily room cleaning, the rooms are clean and well-kept. Hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and original radiators give the rooms historic character, yet each is also equipped with modern amenities such as iPod docks and free Wi-Fi. Each room has a queen bed, two-person sofa bed, and a kitchenette with microwave, mini-fridge, coffeemaker, and gas stovetop. Multiple windows provide great views to the beach in some rooms, but there is some noise from the boardwalk to be expected along with it. Weekly cleaning and linen services are available for extended stays, otherwise guests are on their on your own with on-site the coin-operated laundry machine.

Features

Easy beach access and free use of beach equipment

The staff keep a pile of convenient beach toys and equipment in the lobby for guests to take anytime, including surfboards, boogie boards, volleyballs, beach chairs, and more. The Venice bike path and beach are within stumbling distance and some rooms have excellent ocean views. One of the hotel's turn-of-the-century remnants is a 100 year-old elevator named Betsy. With the Venice boardwalk (and the activity and people-watching of Venice Beach itself) right out of the front door, the biggest draw here is undoubtedly the location.
