Pousada de Mong-Ha

This 19th-century former Portuguese military barracks is now the training grounds for students of the Institute for Tourism Studies. The charming, four-pearl Pousada de Mong-Ha offers well-manicured grounds -- including an herb garden and fountains -- that contribute to the overall relaxed atmosphere. The stark two and three-floor buildings are clean with balconies that overlook the hotel’s verdant grounds. Yellow and blue Portuguese tiles line interior courtyards. Wood latticework on the front desk adds charm to the small lobby, where guests are greeted by hospitality students. Since this hotel is on a hillside and has steps -- without any elevator -- it’s not an idea location for those with physical limitations. Note that rooms book out well in advance.

This hotel’s quiet location provides an alternative to the typical Macau vacation near the casinos. Situated on a hill, this hotel is within 25 minutes walking distance -- albeit uphill -- from the Macau Ferry Terminal that goes to Hong Kong. There isn’t direct bus transportation to the hotel, but taxi service is available, and a hotel provides free one-way shuttle service to the ferry terminal. The hotel is on the Institute for Tourism Studies campus and beside a library and public park space with a large fountain. It’s a 15-minute drive to the shops, casinos, and restaurants on the Cotai Strip. Within 15 minutes by car are Taipa Village’s Rua do Cunha, the Ruins of St. Paul, Largo do Senado, and the A-Ma Temple. The Macau International Airport is a 10- to 15-minute drive.

Guest rooms at the Pousada de Mong-Ha blend Chinese and Portuguese designs to create a welcoming setting. Rooms feature secretary desks, red decor, carved wooden headboards, and floral textiles. Guests traverse through the lovely courtyards to reach rooms. Standard Rooms, which are too small for rollaway beds, are just over half the size of Deluxe Rooms; these larger rooms come with extras such as comfortable chairs and ottomans, separate work areas, and balconies. One-bedroom Suites offer separate Chinese-themed living rooms and balconies. Most rooms offer minibars with free non-alcoholic drinks, plus electric kettles, safes, and irons/ironing boards. Upgraded rooms have slippers and bathrobes. Tiled bathrooms have walk-in showers or shower/tub combos plus hairdryers. 

Pousada de Mong-Ha has several posh features that enhance its upscale status. The hotel offers a free buffet breakfast and high tea in the Pousada restaurant, which features lovely Portuguese tile designs. The Education Restaurant -- also with Macanese and Portuguese cuisine -- has modern interiors with a colorful lounge, bar seating, and a terrace. There are also tables on the rooftop and a veranda offers more cushioned seating and city views. Fitness machines can be found on the rooftop, and there's an indoor gym with modern cardio and weight machines plus flat-screen TVs. Four meeting spaces -- fitting between 30 to 270 people -- are on the property and have audiovisual equipment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
