Bottom Line

One of the oldest properties on Mackinac Island, Hotel Iroquois has only been run by two families since it began operating as a hotel in 1904. With 46 rooms, it’s like a much more intimate version of the island's famous Grand Hotel, but has a similar level of style and luxury. Set on a curve of Main Street, it’s convenient to the ferry docks, but somewhat removed from the main part of town. Rooms on the garden side of the hotel lack air-conditioning, while those by the water have unbeatable views but can get noise from the ferry docks. Rates include a continental breakfast with homemade breads and pastries, but are higher than at the nearby and highly-rated Main Street Inn and Suites. That said, the Hotel Iroquois is an authentically historic mid-range property that’s arguably more sophisticated.

Hotel Iroquois

Scene

Old-fashioned atmosphere with an upscale feel

The Hotel Iroquois is housed in a large Victorian-style building sitting along a curve in the road, right by the water, that's surrounded by lush green lawns and colorful flowers. Interior decor has a classic Mackinac Island look, dominated by florals, but it’s more stylish and sedate than average, and the greens, yellows, and pinks are bright, but not as loud as in some properties. The hotel has a beautiful windowed porch with white-and-green woven furniture, French doors, and a dramatic domed ceiling. In keeping with the old-fashioned feel, guests are given actual metal keys to their rooms (as opposed to card keys). The luxurious and quiet atmosphere is more suited to adults than it is to families with children.

Location

Right by the ferry docks, but removed from the busiest part of town

Hotel Iroquois sits right by the ferry docks on Main Street, along with the main hotels, shops, and restaurants on Mackinac Island, but is located right before a bend in the road, so it feels removed from the hustle and bustle. Most attractions on this car-free island are within walking distance, including Fort Mackinac, which is seven minutes away on foot, and the Grand Hotel, which is a 10-minute walk.

Rooms

Stylish rooms with plush linens and bright island colors

Each of the hotel’s 46 guest rooms and suites are individually decorated with brightly colored floral wallpaper, most in shades of fuchsia and lime green, as well as plush linens and carpeting that together give the rooms an upscale feel. The bathrooms have an old-fashioned look, some with black and white hexagonal tiles, and all contain curtained shower/tub combos. Some suites have small kitchenettes with sinks, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. All rooms are stocked with flat-screen TVs and DVD players, iPod docks, irons and ironing boards, and hairdryers. Waterside rooms provide air-conditioning, though rooms facing the garden only have ceiling fans. Rooms by the water can get some noise from the ferry boats.
