Quinta da Bela Vista

The Quinta da Bela Vista is a thoroughly old-school hotel built off an old manor house, although its interior could be mistaken for an English country manor. There's an overall impression of elegant retreat throughout the property thanks to its secluded location and lovely, though dated in some places (primarily rooms), interior spaces. The lobby and common areas -- such as the cozy living room -- are done in warm ivory and beige tones punctuated by antiques and pops of pine- and rose-upholstered furniture, as well as lots of fine art, chandeliers, and even two fireplaces. Well-manicured grounds are attractive, with water features, climbing vines, and stone paths, plus distant sea views are available from a few vantage points. Clientele are typically older guests who desire peace and quiet. 

Secluded from the main road by a short driveway and a wall spilling over with lush plants, the Quinta da Bela Vista is also set off from the more popular tourist areas, such as the strip of properties near the Lido Promenade, and the main town of Funchal. A shuttle bus runs guests to and from Funchal (10 minutes), and the local bus running into town conveniently has a stop just outside the door for added flexibility. Guests wanting to go to the Lido Promenade will need to hire a taxi, which will take about 10 minutes. The hotel is 20 minutes from the airport by taxi. On-site parking is free.

The rooms carry on the feeling of being in an elegant country home, though they're more plainly decorated than the common areas. They typically have carpeted floors, classic wood furnishings, white sheets, floral curtains, and minimal small pieces of artwork. Some have nice touches such as antiques and armoires filled with tea sets. Details such as pale-red armchairs, brass lamps, and tube-style TVs date the spaces. Like with many Madeira hotels, the firm beds (except in Junior Suites) consist of two twins pushed together. Standard amenities include free safes, air-conditioning, minibars, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms vary wildly in size between room types , but all have shower/tub combos, bathrobes, hairdryers, bidets, and quality toiletries.

Facilities aren't extensive, as the Quinta da Bela Vista lacks a spa and kid-friendly features. However, it does have a heated outdoor pool surrounded by loungers and umbrellas. Next to it is the pool bar, with patio seating, as well as a lovely indoors area. Both of the property's restaurants offer great food, but the Avista Navios is the more sophisticated of the two, with an excellent breakfast buffet included in the room rate and a la carte menu for dinner. The Quinta da Bela Vista Restaurant serves a five-course set menu nightly with no a la carte option. 

The health club has a small gym with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, very limited equipment, and oddly, a hot tub. A tennis court and game room with billiards are available, as well as a library stocked with plenty of books and comfortable leather furniture. Wi-Fi is free but patchy throughout the buildings.
