Bottom Line

A funky, 17-room boutique hotel located in Madrid's arty Lavapies district, the Artrip is modern and minimalist, with small luxuries that make a difference to weary travelers, such as rainforest showers and good coffee, ground fresh, free all day long. Ten minutes on foot from Madrid's three most famous art museums, the Prado, Thyssen, and the Reina Sofia, as well as Sunday's open air flea market, El Rastro, Artrip brings the bohemian vibe inside, hanging the work of local artists on the walls.

Artrip Hotel

Scene

Sun-drenched and simple, with industrial-chic furnishings and art as the centerpiece

Located on a tree-lined, cobblestone street, the Artrip feels fresh, clean, and out of the way despite being surrounded by restaurants, cafes, a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and, of course, art galleries. Rooms are soundproofed and minimally decorated, with large windows and, in some cases, small balconies, which makes them feel spacious and restful. Unique touches like hand painted room numbers and zen-like sprigs of bamboo in lieu of flowers contribute to the hotel's funky, boho vibe.

Location

An arty neighborhood for travelers seeking la vie boheme

Sitting out of the way on a tree-lined, residential street, the Artrip is an ideal home base for art-loving travelers who want to spend time in Madrid's three most famous museums, while experiencing the local color and cuisine (think tapas) in the Lavapies and La Latina, the Latin Quarter. As in Paris's Montmartre, churches and open-air cafes line the hilly cobblestoned streets around the Artrip. Retiro Park and Sunday's Rastro flea market are also within walking distance, as is Atocha train station, from which all Madrid and more is easily reached.

Rooms

Pristine, carefully curated spaces are a blank canvas for the artistic traveler

Artrip's minimalist rooms are white with carefully chosen splashes of color that add to the spacious modern feel of the otherwise small spaces. Some rooms have beamed ceilings, some have chic wooden shutters, and the two attic rooms are garrett-like, with mansard roofs that echo the bohemian neighborhood outside. Adjoining rooms and a family room with bunk beds are available. Closets are small and open. Sinks and showers have an expensive, zen-like design, and rainforest shower heads give weary guests a spa-like boost. Note that there are no bathtubs, and water closet and shower are behind frosted glass, which may create privacy concerns for some guests. Rooms have flat screen-TVs with international satellite service, and in-room safes are large enough for laptops.

Features

Free fresh-ground coffee, water, Wi-fi and a library set Artrip apart

Artrip's extras distinguish it from other budget hotels. Fresh coffee is always available for free in the lobby. Bottled water, fresh apples, and an electric teakettle are provided in the rooms. Free Wi-fi works well throughout the hotel. There is a small lobby library where guests can claim books that have been left behind. There are laptops in the lobby for guest use. Breakfast is simple but good and inexpensive. A car park is located a few doors away, for a fee.
