Bottom Line

A quirky and cute hotel with a vintage theme, the upper-middle-range Hotel Opera is centrally located in Madrid, not far from the Teatro Real and the Plaza de España, with tourist sights, public transportation, restaurants, and shopping all within easy walking distance. The decor includes hardwood floors, leather chairs, patterned wallpaper, but the faux-wood paneling, pervasive neutral color palette, and lack of artwork do make it feel lackluster. Rooms are smaller than those at other hotels in the area and some get exterior noise; however, the space is organized well and rooms are comfortable, homey, and more than functional. In addition to a large, cozy business lounge with computers and a vintage switchboard, the hotel has a 1950s-inspired bar and a restaurant with singing waiters. There's also a rooftop fitness center and sauna, as well as a recently opened rooftop terrace, and breakfast is free if you book through the hotel's website.

HOTEL OPERA

Scene

Comfortable boutique hotel with a 1950s theme

Vintage-inspired wood- and tile-work combined with plush, stylized furnishings give The Hotel Opera a cozy, 1950s-inspired feel. Light parquet wood floors and soft suede couches in the business lounge lend a library-like feel; there’s also an antique switchboard to add to the atmosphere. Patent leather chairs, crown moldings, and potted plants in both the business lounge and the bar contribute to the sophisticated, vintage vibe. Most of the hotel is decorated in neutral tones, with the exception of the breakfast room, which is adorned with mint-colored paint and textured blue wallpaper. Although the breakfast room doesn’t have any windows, it is bright, and the front desk feels a bit sleeker, with an under-lit wood desk. Both the rooftop terrace and the fitness center have impressive city views.

Rooms

Compact and efficient, but a bit bland

Rooms at Hotel Opera are a bit smaller than others in the area (and some are downright small); however, the space is used efficiently. A wooden closet provides storage and there are stylized silver reading lights attached to the faux-wood headboard. Sheets are white, with a brown dust ruffle, and the neutral artwork doesn’t add any character. Stocked minibars, free newspapers, and flat-screen TVs are all included, and, although rooms are soundproofed, many guests complain of street noise. Bathrooms are larger and more updated than the rooms, with modern tan tile-work, rainfall showerheads, combination shower/tubs, and great lighting. The modern sinks provide a good amount of counter space and, like the rooms, each bathroom uses the space efficiently. A frosted glass door on the bathroom makes the space feel more up-to-date. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.
