Bottom Line

The boutique Hotel Urban is a luxurious hotel with a long list of features. Not only does it feature a lovely rooftop pool lined by lounge chairs, it is also home to a small fitness center, two swanky restaurants and a bar, and even a museum area of ancient antiques. The 102 rooms, however, aren't as impressive as the rest of the hotel. Sure, they're spacious and include large flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi access (the first hour is free), but the decor is relatively bland: Furniture shows some wear and tear, the beds feature shiny bronze bedspreads, and the lack of color give them a masculine-bordering-on-boring look. Nonetheless, Hotel Urban remains a solid pick, in part due to its convenient location in the heart of Madrid, within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and nearly every main sight the city has to offer.

Hotel Urban

Location

Just a few blocks from Puerta del Sol in the heart of Madrid

Hotel Urban has an ideal location two blocks from Puerta del Sol, steps from Huertas (a major nightlife hotspot), and near many attractions. A bus terminal, where many bus lines start and end, is just a short walk away and the subway is down the street. However, the location is very convenient for those who want to explore the city on foot. Many must-see attractions such as Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, Cibeles, and Gran Via are all within an easy walking distance.

Great shopping around Sol and Gran Via are a stroll away, as is La Latina, a tapas and al fresco dining and drinking hotspot (cross beautiful Plaza Mayor to get there). The Austrias area, with 17th-century architecture and cobblestone streets is just a few blocks down, past Puerta del Sol.

Sol is the heart of Madrid, both geographically speaking and in a figurative sense. "Kilometer Zero" (where all roads in Spain are said to start), shopping, dining, nightlife, and major tourist attractions are all here. This means many tourists in Madrid never leave the neighborhood. For those who prefer taking public transportation, Sol is one of the major transportation hubs in Madrid, with trains, buses, and several subway lines converging on the same spot.

  • 18-minute drive to Madrid-Barajas Airport
  • Steps to numerous to restaurants and bars
  • 3-minute walk to Puerta del Sol
  • 6-minute walk to La Latina, a nightlife hotspot
  • 7-minute walk to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
  • 8-minute walk to shopping on Gran Via
  • 8-minute walk to Plaza Mayor
  • 9-minute walk to Cibeles
  • 13-minute walk to El Prado Museum
  • 14-minute walk to Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens
  • 14-minute walk to La Almudena Cathedral
  • 14-minute walk to Reina Sofia Museum
  • 15-minute walk to Puerta de Alcala
  • 15-minute walk to Retiro Park, Madrid's most famous garden
  • 24-minute walk to Templo de Debod Park, with great views and an original Egyptian temple, or 13 minutes via public transportation
  • 9-minute drive to upscale shopping on Serrano Street
  • 12-minute subway ride to Atocha train station
  • 30-minute subway ride to Plaza de Castilla, the financial district
