Bottom Line

Hotel Wellington is a classically beautiful, historic hotel in Salamanca, just a short walk from the famous Retiro Park. The grand lobby has a stately vibe, with crystal chandeliers, velvet furniture, and high ceilings, and the look continues throughout the hotel -- though it's a bit simpler in the 255 rooms. Rooms have small flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi, but standard rooms are a bit small and some feature two beds pushed together -- which is common in Madrid, but not what one would expect at a luxury hotel. Like a luxury hotel, however, Hotel Wellington features a long list of amenities: a 24-hour business center, well-equipped fitness center, spa with numerous features, seasonal outdoor pool, and seven dining options, one of which is a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant. Plus, the hotel's rich history is impressive; after all, it has hosted the likes of Gene Kelly and Ernest Hemingway.

Wellington Hotel

Location

In upscale Salamanca, just a short walk from Retiro Park

Hotel Wellington is located in upscale Salamanca neighborhood and just a short walk from Retiro Park. The hotel is close to the action without being right on top of it, so street noise at night isn't too much of a problem. Salamanca is the only area in Madrid with a grid system, which makes it easier to navigate than other more central areas in the old city. There are few sights in the heart of the neighborhood aside from high-end boutiques and expensive restaurants, but attractions such as El Prado Museum, El Retiro Park, Puerta de Alcala, and the National Library are an easy walk away. There are two Metro stations and several bus lines within four blocks from the hotel.

The capital of Spain is a vibrant, multicultural city located right in the center of the country. The Cuatro Torres business area's additions to the city skyline (four sleek towers, including a hotel and corporate offices) give an idea of what Madrid is rapidly becoming: a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city -- albeit one that preserves its century-old traditions.

  • 16-minute drive to Madrid-Barajas Airport
  • 5-minute walk to Retiro Park, Madrid's most famous garden
  • 15-minute walk to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
  • 20-minute walk to El Prado Museum, or a 5-minute drive
  • 21-minute walk to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, or an 11-minute subway ride
  • 21-minute walk to shopping on Gran Via, or a 4-minute drive
  • 6-minute drive to Reina Sofia Museum, or a 20-minute subway
  • 8-minute drive to Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens, or a 17-minute subway ride
  • 9-minute drive to Atocha train station
  • 10-minute drive to Templo de Debod Park, with great views and an original Egyptian temple, or a 25-minute bus ride
  • 12-minute drive to Plaza de Castilla, the financial district, or a 24-minute subway ride
