Bottom Line

The mid-range Laura is part of the Spanish Room Mate chain, offering a stylish boutique hotel atmosphere and plenty of space at a reasonable rate. Along with Standard rooms and suites, there are also Duplexes and Family rooms with separate living rooms and sleeping lofts, along with kitchenettes. The Laura is set in a quiet area at the center of the city, but it's walkable to many attractions. It’s worth comparing rates with other Room Mate hotels, such as the Alicia.

Room Mate Laura

Scene

Striking modern decor

The building’s facade is pretty traditional, and doesn’t even hint at the bold design inside. The lobby is wall-to-wall red and white, with bright crimson couches and wall coverings reflected in the tops of round mirrored tables. With the cardboard DJ setup and swirly light fixtures, it looks more like a club than a hotel, though there’s no bar. The breakfast room is slightly more subdued, but still plenty modern, with large circular light fixtures covered in blue and white plastic pod chairs at black tables.

Rooms

Chic, modern design, with kitchenettes and some lofts

The 37 rooms are just as fashion forward as the rest of the hotel, with bright pops of color in furniture and accessories set up against a mostly white canvas. Beds sit in front of large recessed murals of Spanish royal Juana de Austria. Bathrooms have black subway tiled floors and and roomy stall showers, along with deep bucket-shaped sinks. All rooms have kitchenettes, though there’s an extra charge for the full set-up with utensils. The stairs that lead to the loft areas in the Duplexes and Family rooms are a bit steep, so travelers might be wary of carrying up heavy luggage or having small children around them. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and hairdryers.
