Bottom Line

The Black Point Inn offers stunning waterfront on three sides, in a secluded spot along Western Cove. It's the only resort on Prouts Neck, and many guest enjoy the remote environment (though it's still convenient, as Portland is only a 20-minute drive away). Spacious rooms have classic New England style, and there are two restaurants on-site (so visitors won't have to drive all the way back into town to get a meal). There's a heated pool , but no spa or Jacuzzi, and the property is open only seasonally.

Black Point Inn

Scene

Elegant New England-style hotel with quiet surroundings

Built in 1878 and originally known as the Southgate House, the Black Point Inn is the only hotel left in Prouts Neck. The area is known for its natural beauty and rich history, and the hotel’s grand architecture fits in quite nicely.

The overall feel at the hotel is a blend of subdued elegance and traditional New England charm. With its fine dining restaurant , charming lobby and common areas , and expansive grounds overlooking the water, this is a place that is visually impressive.

Location

Secluded waterfront spot along Western Cove

In the coastal town of Scarborough, Maine, Black Point Inn is located in front of Western Cove in a quiet residential neighborhood. There isn’t much going on near the hotel itself, but visually it is stunning, with Prout’s Cliff Walk going along the waterfront. Surrounded by water on three sides, guests get to see some amazing sunsets.

Driving into town along a winding, country road, travelers will find the usual suspects of grocery stores, restaurants, and shops on Route 1.

While other parts of Maine are accessible by public transportation such as buses and trains, Scarborough is definitely an area where a car is needed. It’s not a bad jumping off point for visiting other towns, however. Head north to Freeport for outlet shopping, or head south to York to check out the famed Neddick Lighthouse.

A little more than 20 minutes away is Maine’s biggest city of Portland. There visitors can wander the historic Old Port district along the Harbor, or the Arts District along Congress Street and get their fill of food, shopping, and sightseeing. Foodies will appreciate Portland’s love for food and the abundance of great restaurants. Nature lovers will enjoy the many historic parks within the city. Or, if sports are your thing, catch a Portland Sea Dogs (one of the Red Sox farm teams) game during the season.

Rooms

Classic New England decor

Much like the exterior of the hotel, the spacious rooms at Black Point Inn exude a stately vibe. The decor is a little stuffy in the classic New England way, with lots of floral patterns and dark wood furnishings. However, there are modern features such as flat-screen TVs, luxe bedding , and free Wi-Fi. Some of the bathrooms could use some updating, but they are a decent size. Some rooms have private balconies with stunning views overlooking the water.
